Role Overview

The Senior Automation Controls Integration Specialist is a key member of a team responsible for implementing comprehensive automated manufacturing protocols, encompassing hardware, software, robotics, safety measures, and programming. This role involves translating innovative concepts from the design phase into operational production. Areas of focus include Stamping, Battery (module), Pack, Body (BIW/welding), Paint, Drive Unit, and General Assembly.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation of RFQs and evaluate vendor proposals for automation systems, from individual workstations to entire production lines.
  • Ensure adherence to Rivian standards by guiding vendors through the correct implementation of hardware, electrical systems, safety protocols, pneumatic systems, networks, PLCs, HMIs, robots, SCADA, and MES.
  • Oversee vendor management throughout the specification, development, design review, virtual commissioning, installation, and production start-up phases.
  • Develop and control test plans, executing them at vendor locations and Rivian's facilities for various acceptance tests, including virtual commissioning and safety assessments.
  • Contribute to the evolution of controls standards and specifications by providing feedback on lessons learned and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Review and validate electrical schematics for automation systems, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
  • Evaluate and approve pneumatic hardware selections and circuit designs for suitability.
  • Assess network configurations and IP address allocations, optimizing systems for remote access, diagnostics, data collection, and cybersecurity.
  • Draft, review, and validate PLC logic, emphasizing clarity, organization, documentation, and reusability.
  • Create, review, and approve user-friendly HMI and SCADA interfaces for efficient equipment operation and troubleshooting.
  • Implement MES logic for production management within PLCs and HMIs.
  • Guide vendors in the proper establishment of ANSI/RIA15.06/OSHA-compliant safety systems for safeguarding manufacturing equipment.
  • Diagnose and enhance automated processes to reduce cycle times, maximize equipment availability, and improve production yield.
  • Support vendors through the installation and commissioning phases until production ramps up.
  • Provide training to Maintenance and Production teams responsible for ongoing equipment support.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • A minimum of 6 years of practical experience in Controls Engineering or Applications Engineering within a dynamic manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with standard controls hardware components utilized in high-volume production.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Electrical Standards (NFPA79, National Electric Code, UL508A).
  • Experience in developing electrical schematics using tools such as ePLAN or AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Thorough knowledge of Safety Standards (ANSI/RIA15.06, OSHA).
  • Advanced skills in programming industrial equipment using IEC standards.
  • Proficiency in programming Allen-Bradley Rockwell, Siemens, or Beckhoff PLCs.
  • Experience in HMI programming for automated systems using FactoryTalk View, WinCC, Ignition, TwinCAT HMI, or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with programming and interfacing PLCs with industrial robots.
  • Experience in designing and troubleshooting fieldbus networks such as Ethernet/IP, Profinet, and EtherCAT.
  • Understanding of communication protocols between machine PLCs and database systems.
  • This role may require travel during peak project phases.
