Overview

Position Summary: This role is situated within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, focusing on providing exceptional care to critically ill newborns.

Salary negotiations may be considered for candidates transitioning into Federal service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess and execute appropriate interventions upon recognizing and interpreting life-threatening conditions.
  • Request laboratory tests and imaging studies based on clinical evaluations and physician orders.
  • Support specialized procedures conducted in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
  • Administer intravenous therapies, including hyperalimentation, intralipids, and blood products.
  • Utilize and monitor advanced medical equipment, such as oxygen monitors, oximeters, ventilators, infusion pumps, and defibrillators.
  • Foster a supportive environment for families, encouraging their involvement in the care and education of their child.

Requirements:
  • Appointment may be contingent upon a suitability or fitness determination, based on a comprehensive background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is mandatory.
  • This position involves interaction with minors, necessitating specific background checks and periodic re-verification.
  • Selected candidates must agree to seasonal influenza vaccinations or provide a valid exemption.
  • This role is designated as Testing Designated, requiring pre-employment screening and random drug testing.
  • A pre-placement medical evaluation is necessary.
  • Physical demands may include lifting weights up to 45 pounds.
  • Immunization screening is essential, including Hepatitis B for roles with direct patient contact.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required, with advanced certifications (e.g., ALS) not substituting for BLS.
  • Certification in the American Academy of Pediatrics Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) must be achieved within three months of employment.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications are required within six months of employment.
  • Completion of Sugar Temperature Airway Blood pressure Lab Work and Emotional Support (STABLE) training is required within one year.
  • Compliance with non-privileged professional credentialing requirements is mandatory.
  • This position may necessitate rotating shifts and working during irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications

To qualify, candidates must meet the educational and experience criteria outlined below. Experience includes both paid and unpaid roles, including volunteer work through National Service programs and other organizations.

Basic Requirement for Clinical Nurse (Neonatal Care):

Education: A graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited nursing program is required. Accreditation must be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time of degree completion. (Transcripts must be attached.)

Licensure: A current, unrestricted license as a professional nurse from a U.S. state or territory is required, along with successful completion of the National Council Licensure Examination.

Foreign Education: Candidates with degrees from foreign nursing schools must provide official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools.

Exemption: Current federal employees in the 0610 occupational series continuously employed since September 27, 2017, may be exempt from certain requirements.

Education/Experience: A diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing with at least one year of professional nursing experience in critical care settings is required.

OR

A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a recognized nursing or medical science program.
