As a vital member of the healthcare team, the Patient Care Assistant performs essential patient care and administrative tasks under the guidance of medical professionals in both inpatient and outpatient environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide assistance to patients with personal care to ensure optimal recovery during their stay.
- Execute fundamental nursing tasks as directed by a Registered Nurse (RN) in accordance with established protocols to enhance patient health and wellness.
- Accurately capture and document patient information, including vital signs, weight, and fluid intake/output measurements.
- Promptly report any changes in patient conditions or abnormal findings to the supervising RN.
- Support patients with personal hygiene, activities of daily living (ADLs), mobility exercises, and ambulation.
- Collect, label, and send specimens for laboratory testing.
- Maintain thorough documentation of all patient care activities.
- Assist healthcare professionals during physical examinations and medical procedures.
- Ensure a safe environment and the secure delivery of care, continuously monitoring for safety hazards.
- Identify patients accurately prior to any intervention.
- Adhere to safe transfer and positioning practices for patients.
- Perform routine cleaning and safety checks on equipment as instructed.
- Report any incidents involving patients, staff, or visitors to the RN or supervisor in accordance with the institution's quality reporting procedures.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the institution's emergency protocols and infection control measures.
- Engage in administrative support tasks, including maintaining medical records and managing inventory.
- Fulfill additional duties as assigned, such as scheduling diagnostic tests and welcoming patients.
- Commit to ongoing professional development and maintain necessary competencies in equipment usage.
- Complete mandatory training and regulatory requirements within specified timeframes.
Compensation
The compensation range for this position is $20.34 to $23.82 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Experience: No prior experience necessary; relevant experience is preferred.
Licensure: Certification as a Nursing Aide (CNA) through the Virginia Board of Nursing is required, along with American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification.
Physical Requirements
This role requires frequent bending and stooping, effective communication skills, and the ability to lift/push/pull weights ranging from 20 to 50 pounds. Exposure to chemicals, blood, body fluids, and infectious diseases may occur.
