Position Overview:

As a vital member of the healthcare team, the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician operates under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist to manage the preparation, distribution, and dispensing of medications and pharmaceutical products, including intravenous solutions and hazardous substances. This role is essential in maintaining the pharmacy's inventory and equipment while supporting other healthcare professionals through proactive problem-solving and communication.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Inventory Management
  • Oversees and assesses the adequacy of pharmaceutical inventory in assigned areas; ensures the return of medications that are recalled, expired, or damaged in accordance with established protocols.
  • Collaborates with inventory control staff to optimize workflow within the pharmacy.
  • Familiarizes with Safety Data Sheets and ensures proper disposal of waste materials, including confidential documents and hazardous medications, following regulatory guidelines.
  • Assists in maintaining non-hospital inventory standards by organizing and restocking supplies, as well as preparing monthly reports.
  • Utilizes knowledge of formulary to aid in cost management efforts.
  • Medication Preparation and Dispensing
  • Informs the pharmacist of any potential medication contraindications related to allergies or interactions as indicated by clinical systems.
  • Prepares patient-specific medication supplies based on administration records, ensuring accuracy in dosage and packaging.
  • Reviews and verifies the work of fellow pharmacy technicians to ensure compliance with established protocols for medication distribution.
  • Accurately selects and prepares medications according to physician orders, considering special handling requirements.
  • Ensures that all medications are correctly labeled and documented as per regulatory standards.
  • Prepares both sterile and non-sterile compounded medications while adhering to aseptic techniques and relevant standards.
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment to minimize contamination risks during the compounding process.
  • Operational Systems and Equipment
  • Operates and maintains pharmacy-specific equipment, including automated dispensing systems and compounding devices, ensuring they are functioning optimally.
  • Utilizes electronic systems for efficient medication management.
  • Regulatory Compliance
  • Adheres to Kaiser Permanente's policies, state and federal regulations, and standards governing pharmacy practice.
  • Maintains knowledge of controlled substances and ensures compliance with documentation and security protocols.

  • Pharmacy Technician License (California)
Additional Skills:
  • Knowledge of aseptic techniques and sterile IV preparation.
  • Willingness to learn about hazardous drug preparation.
  • Strong communication skills in both oral and written formats.
  • Ability to interpret and transcribe pharmaceutical information accurately.
  • Familiarity with various drug forms, classifications, and nomenclature.
  • Proficient in using pharmacy-related computer systems.
  • Understanding of legal and regulatory requirements for pharmaceutical services.
  • Physical capability to perform job duties, including lifting and standing for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)
