Position Overview:

Under the supervision of the Radiation Manager or Therapy Lead, the Radiation Therapist collaborates with clinical physicists, dosimetrists, and fellow therapists as part of a comprehensive treatment team.

Staff therapists are skilled in multiple departmental functions, focusing primarily on the precise and safe administration of daily radiation therapies. Mastery is achieved through diverse rotations across all treatment units, along with adequate exposure to CT simulation.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care and Guidance:

Thoroughly explains radiation procedures to patients and reinforces physician directives regarding treatment reactions and care.

Confirms patient details such as name, date of birth, and identification to ensure accurate treatment. Safely transfers patients to treatment couches, paying special attention to catheters and IVs.

Addresses patients' physical needs during their time in the department to maintain safety and comfort throughout the radiation process.

Provides emotional support and general information to patients as appropriate, adhering to confidentiality guidelines. Escalates concerns to interdepartmental staff (RN, MD, etc.) when necessary.

Assesses the treatment area to determine if special precautions are needed, reporting any alarming conditions, such as skin breakdown or sore throat, to the relevant personnel. Monitors patients' mental health status and reports any changes to appropriate staff.

Preparation for Procedures:

Prepares treatment rooms and equipment according to prescribed instructions, including immobilization devices, field size, treatment distance, and shielding.

Ensures that treatment rooms are adequately stocked with supplies at the end of each day and reports low supply levels to the appropriate personnel.

Execution of Procedures:
Ensures that all necessary forms are reviewed and signed by both the patient and physician. Assists patients in undressing while ensuring their privacy is maintained. Properly attaches restraining and protective devices to patients before treatment. Positions patients according to instructions, utilizing necessary devices to ensure accurate treatment delivery. Reviews and initials therapy charts for prescriptions and signed consent forms, ensuring physics approval is obtained. Conducts simulation procedures in accordance with departmental techniques and guidelines. Adheres to departmental policies for monitoring patient dosimetry.

Operation of Equipment:
Operates machinery in compliance with safety regulations. Dismantles, cleans, and stores equipment following departmental standards. Evaluates and discusses any necessary changes to treatment fields with the physician. Monitors equipment during operation to ensure proper functionality. Manages the storage and disposal of contaminated or expired materials in accordance with departmental procedures. Conducts safety inspections and tests as required to meet safety standards. Checks treatment room supplies to ensure readiness for emergencies. Recognizes critical situations requiring immediate attention and contacts the nurse or physician as needed. Provides emergency assistance as directed by the appropriate authority or emergency team leader. Effectively schedules treatments to minimize delays while allowing time for contingencies. Communicates treatment schedules or changes promptly to patients and relevant personnel. Maintains daily billing records and reviews the accuracy of information for official reports. Accurately documents daily treatments in patients' radiation therapy charts and details decisions and actions for future reference. Takes photographs of patients' treatment setups when applicable.

Administers IV contrast as prescribed by the physician, adhering to established policies and procedures.

Pours electron blocks as necessary.

Organizational Skills:
Effectively schedules time by prioritizing daily and weekly tasks. Prevents crises through systematic planning and follow-through. Develops and maintains relationships with colleagues to coordinate interrelated activities efficiently. Ensures a smooth workflow by making timely requests and responding quickly to others.

Problem Resolution:
Identifies and promptly reports problems or potential issues to supervisors. Takes immediate corrective action when appropriate and utilizes available resources to resolve issues. Proposes alternative solutions when feasible.

Communication:
Clearly presents information and explains procedures to ensure understanding. Listens attentively to others to respond appropriately and gather necessary information. Maintains confidentiality in communications as per hospital policy.

Independence and Initiative:
Works autonomously and initiates ideas or activities that positively influence outcomes. Keeps supervisors and peers informed as necessary. Seeks guidance in areas outside personal expertise when required. Actively investigates factors that hinder goal achievement and makes appropriate recommendations. Pursues objectives until they are met or deemed unattainable.
