Overview:


Under the supervision of the Radiation Manager or Therapy Lead, the Radiation Therapist collaborates with clinical physicists, dosimetrists, and fellow therapists as part of a comprehensive treatment team.

Staff therapists are skilled in numerous departmental functions, primarily focusing on the precise and safe administration of daily radiation therapies. Mastery is achieved through diverse rotations across all treatment units, along with sufficient exposure to CT simulation.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care and Education:

Thoroughly explains radiation procedures to patients and reinforces the physician's instructions regarding treatment reactions and care.

Confirms patient details including name, date of birth, and identification to ensure accurate treatment. Safely transfers patients to the treatment couch, paying special attention to catheters and IVs.

Addresses patients' physical needs during their time in the department to maintain support and uphold radiation safety protocols.

Provides emotional support and general information to patients as appropriate, adhering to confidentiality guidelines. Escalates concerns to interdepartmental staff (RN, MD, etc.) when necessary.

Assesses the treatment area to determine if special precautions are needed, reporting any alarming conditions, such as skin breakdown or sore throat, to the relevant personnel. Monitors patients' mental health status and any changes, reporting to the appropriate staff.

Preparation for Procedures:

Prepares the treatment room and equipment according to the prescription and specific instructions regarding immobilization devices, field size, treatment distance, and shielding.

Ensures the room is adequately stocked with supplies at the end of each day and notifies appropriate personnel when supplies are running low.

Execution of Procedures:
Ensures that all necessary forms are reviewed and signed by both the patient and physician. Assists patients in undressing, ensuring that appropriate areas are covered with gowns. Properly attaches restraining, protective, and/or monitoring devices to the patient before treatment. Positions patients according to established instructions, utilizing necessary devices to ensure accurate treatment delivery. Reviews and initials the therapy chart for prescription accuracy, confirming the physician's signature and signed consent form. Checks the therapy chart for physics approval. Conducts simulation procedures in accordance with departmental techniques and guidelines. Adheres to departmental policies for monitoring patient dosimetry for TLDs and for treating TBI, TSE, and SBRT patients.

Operation of Machines and Equipment:
Operates machinery in compliance with all safety regulations. Dismantles, cleans, and stores equipment following departmental standards and procedures. Manages film treatment fields every 5 to 7 treatments and discusses any necessary changes with the physician. Monitors equipment during operation to ensure proper functionality. Safely stores or disposes of contaminated or expired materials according to departmental protocols. Conducts safety inspections and tests as required to meet safety standards. Checks treatment room supplies to ensure readiness for emergencies. Recognizes critical situations that require immediate attention and contacts the nurse or physician as needed. Initiates appropriate contacts to provide or obtain emergency services as per departmental procedures. Provides emergency assistance as directed by the appropriate authority or emergency team leader. Effectively schedules treatments to minimize delays while allowing adequate time for contingencies. Assigns scheduling priorities based on patient condition or timing of requests. Communicates schedules or rescheduling promptly to patients and relevant personnel. Maintains and reviews daily billing for accuracy in official reports. Accurately documents daily treatments in the patient's radiation therapy chart. Records details of decisions and actions for future reference. Takes photographs of patients' treatment setups when applicable (e.g., electron setups).

Administers IV contrast as prescribed by the physician in accordance with established policies and procedures for CT Simulation.

Prepares electron blocks as necessary.

Effectively schedules time by prioritizing daily and weekly tasks. Prevents crises through systematic planning and follow-through. Develops and maintains relationships with others to effectively plan and coordinate interrelated activities. Ensures efficient workflow by making timely requests and responding quickly to others.

Problem Solving:
Identifies problems and potential issues, reporting them promptly to the supervisor. Takes immediate corrective action when appropriate and utilizes available resources to assist in problem resolution. Suggests alternative solutions when feasible.

Information Exchange:
Clearly presents information, explains procedures, and various routines to ensure understanding. Listens attentively to others to respond appropriately and gather necessary information. Maintains confidentiality in communications as required by hospital policy.

Independence and Tenacity:
Works autonomously and initiates ideas or activities that positively influence outcomes and contribute to goal achievement. Keeps supervisors and peers informed as necessary. Seeks guidance in situations beyond personal expertise when required. Actively investigates circumstances that hinder goal attainment and makes appropriate recommendations. Pursues goals until they are achieved or until their attainment is deemed unreasonable.
