Summary Description

Under the guidance of the Patron Experience Manager, library support specialists play a crucial role in connecting patrons with both physical and digital resources. They assist users with technology, facilitate the circulation of library materials, and deliver outstanding customer service.

This position offers a dynamic work environment where no two days are alike. The Patron Experience department is currently seeking candidates for Substitute positions. Substitutes are typically scheduled to work one weekend shift every four weeks and may work weekdays, evenings, or weekends as needed. This role is ideal for individuals seeking to work up to 20 hours per week, with variable hours.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver friendly and effective customer service to all patrons.
  • Perform basic circulation tasks, including checking in/out library materials and creating library cards.
  • Assist in setting up and maintaining library displays.
  • Provide guidance on the use of electronic and print resources, including subscription databases.
  • Advise patrons on reading materials.
  • Manage the scheduling and monitoring of study rooms.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Monitor inventory and order supplies as necessary.
  • Compile statistical information and reports for the Library Director.
  • Educate patrons on library policies and procedures.
  • Train and support department volunteers.
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development activities.
  • Engage in safety training and staff in-service days.
  • Proctor tests as needed.
  • Assist patrons with overdue accounts and manage payments for lost or damaged materials.
  • Process interlibrary loan requests and coordinate with other libraries.
  • Maintain accurate records of interlibrary loans and related issues.
  • Notify patrons of materials on hold.
  • Collaborate with the Collections department regarding damaged items.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary skills and knowledge is acceptable. Typical qualifications include:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of customer service or administrative experience, preferably in a library setting.
