Position Overview

The Bridging Disciplines Programs (BDPs) at the University of Texas at Austin offer undergraduates the opportunity to earn a certificate in one of seventeen unique interdisciplinary concentrations. This is achieved through a blend of coursework, research, and internship experiences. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States on a full-time basis for any employer.

Role Purpose

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide personalized academic guidance to students involved in or applying to the Bridging Disciplines Programs (BDP), while also offering program-related assistance as a member of the BDP team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Guide undergraduates in formulating an interdisciplinary study plan and assist them in aligning BDP requirements with their degree objectives.
  • Provide individual and group advising to prospective students, facilitate feedback on application materials, and assist students in defining their educational and career aspirations. Participate in faculty panel discussions and relay faculty insights to students.
  • Act as the BDP Connecting Experiences coordinator, establishing connections with internship sites, nurturing relationships with internship and research assistantship providers, and maintaining a blog featuring opportunities in these areas.
  • Contribute actively to the BDP team, engaging in program planning, outreach, communication, events, faculty meetings, and advising initiatives.
  • Organize student workshops, panels, and events aimed at helping students secure and present their research and internship experiences effectively.
  • Fulfill assigned BDP program-related tasks, which may include coordinating student events, assisting with outreach efforts, and contributing to various projects as needed.
  • Coordinate career-focused events for BDP students in collaboration with career services.
  • Engage as a proactive member of the Undergraduate College team, contributing to program planning, serving on committees, and attending relevant events and meetings.

Required Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with four years of experience in academic counseling for college students, or a Master’s degree in a related area with two years of experience in counseling, group facilitation, assessment, and administration of academic programs. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Essential Skills: Exceptional attention to detail, strong writing and communication abilities, effective public speaking skills for diverse audiences, and excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Proven experience in managing multiple complex projects and meeting tight deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

Over four years of experience in academic counseling or working with college students. Experience with educational or co-curricular programs at a higher education institution. Familiarity with interdisciplinary academic programs and a demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary education. A proactive approach to assisting students in achieving their educational and career objectives. Experience in advising students on research and internship opportunities, as well as developing and leading professional development workshops. Experience in organizing and coordinating special events. Knowledge of institutional policies, procedures, course offerings, and degree plans, along with experience advising students on their academic paths.

Salary Information

Compensation starts at $46,000, commensurate with qualifications.
