Position Overview

NOTE: Opportunities are available at our elementary schools for both PreK and Kindergarten.

Every member of the KIPP Texas Team & Family plays a vital role in ensuring our students develop the skills and confidence to pursue their chosen paths. As an Educational Support Specialist at KIPP Texas Public Schools, your primary responsibilities will include:
  • Assisting students in instructional and classroom activities under the guidance of special education and/or general education teachers.
  • Supporting direct academic, functional, and/or specifically designed instructional or physical activities.
  • Tutoring individual students and aiding them in preparing assignments or clarifying material they find challenging.
  • Supervising and accompanying special education students to various locations such as the office, bus, classroom, and cafeteria.
  • Maintaining regular communication with classroom teachers and parents regarding students' needs and progress.
  • In certain situations, providing support to manage excessively disruptive or aggressive students, which may involve physical management techniques.
  • Offering clerical assistance to teachers, including tasks such as creating photocopies and preparing instructional materials.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications

In accordance with the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), instructional aides in Title I schools must meet specific Highly Qualified requirements. To qualify as a Highly Qualified Educational Support Specialist, candidates must possess a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent and meet one of the following criteria:
  1. Complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (defined as completion of 48 semester hours or equivalent trimester hours).
  2. Hold an associate's degree or higher.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics through a formal state or local academic assessment.
Additionally, candidates must meet the state's paraprofessional certification exam and requirements. Those whose duties are solely focused on parent and family engagement activities or translation services are exempt from these qualification requirements.

Additional Qualifications:
  • Experience working with students or parents as approved by the employing superintendent.
  • Ability to assist students with physical disabilities or personal hygiene routines.
  • Knowledge of classroom management and child development principles.
  • Familiarity with applicable federal, state, and local laws, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
