Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Ophthalmic Assistant to join our team at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. As an Ophthalmic Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and supporting our ophthalmologists in the diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions.

Responsibilities
  • Assist ophthalmologists in the examination and treatment of patients, including obtaining medical histories and ocular complaints.
  • Measure patients' glasses and administer eye and oral medications as directed by ophthalmologists.
  • Test ocular functions, including visual acuity, muscle balance, and intra-ocular tension.
  • Change eye dressings and instruct patients and/or caregivers in home care.
  • Maintain ophthalmic instruments by sterilizing surgical instruments and cleaning exposed lenses, mirrors, and prisms.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by ophthalmologists and department leadership.
Requirements
  • High school graduation plus completion of basic and advanced home-study courses approved by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology.
  • Two years of experience in a medical or related field, including one year in a medical or related field.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain confidentiality and discretion when handling patient information.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with patients, ophthalmologists, and other healthcare professionals.
