Job Summary

Parkland Health and Hospital System (PHHS) is seeking a highly skilled Ophthalmic Technician to join our team. As an Ophthalmic Technician, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and supporting the clinical operations of our eye clinic.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct patient work-ups, including manifest refraction, applanation, and dilation, to assist the provider in patient assessment.
  • Test patients for Goldmann and Humphrey visual fields to determine the extent of disease progression.
  • Operate Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) equipment to assist in determining disease extent or progression.
  • Prepare and handle instruments for minor surgery.
  • Instruct patients on contact lens care and handling.
  • Gather information and lab reports for physicians to expedite patient exams.
  • Clean and stock lanes, reporting depleted supplies to ensure sufficient materials.
  • Maintain equipment inventory to prevent shortages.
  • Attend in-services and continuing education clinics to ensure ongoing certification.
  • Administer unit dose medications under the direction of the delegating physician.
  • Identify and analyze job design, workflows, and processes to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Modify approach, communication, and interaction to accommodate sensory impairments and specific patient needs.
  • Recommend changes to improve work processes and customer satisfaction.
  • Maintain and coordinate maintenance for photo equipment.
  • Assist in daily clinical operations, including patient work-ups, history, assessments, and minor surgical procedures.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) training program.
  • Two years of relevant Ophthalmology experience.
  • Certification in Ophthalmology by the Joint Commission Allied Health Personnel (JCAHPO) upon hire.
  • Current healthcare provider BLS for Healthcare Providers certification from the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or Military Training Network.
