The Utilities Supervisor acts as the primary leader for a team of workers engaged in the upkeep and repair of essential utilities. This role includes overseeing the safe operation of designated vehicles, particularly those used for sewer maintenance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure the safe operation of assigned vehicles, including specialized sewer-cleaning machinery.
- Perform skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks related to the repair, upkeep, and installation of fire hydrants, water distribution systems, and sewer lines.
- Lead a small team in the installation and repair of water service connections.
- Supervise a crew engaged in various maintenance and repair activities.
- Conduct repairs and maintenance on damaged water mains, valves, fire hydrants, and sewer collection systems.
- Maintain tools and equipment used in repair tasks, demonstrating knowledge of water and sewer systems.
- Operate assigned vehicles safely, including sewer-cleaning equipment as required by job duties.
- Perform all other related responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent with significant experience in maintaining and repairing water distribution systems.
- Valid Ohio Class A CDL with tanker and air brake endorsements is required, with a provision to obtain it within a specified period if not already held.
- Ability to obtain an Ohio EPA Class I Operator Certification in either Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection within three years of appointment.
- Must achieve Ohio EPA Class I Certification in an additional area within five years of appointment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong communication skills for effective interaction with supervisors and the public.
- In-depth knowledge of tools, equipment, and methods for installing and maintaining fire hydrants, water mains, and sewer systems.
- Awareness of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions.
- Understanding of the operational characteristics of service and maintenance vehicles.
- Ability to guide and supervise team members in task execution.
- Capability to follow written and verbal instructions and maintain accurate records of work performed.
- Skill in preparing reports on maintenance activities.
- Ability to read and interpret maps.
- Physical capability to work in confined spaces and around operating equipment safely.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities are preferred.
