Job Summary and Qualifications

The Vascular Technologist (sonographer) is responsible for performing diagnostic procedures, including arterial and venous Dopplers and vascular imaging, as per physician orders. The sonographer applies knowledge of anatomy, physiology, physics, and instrumentation to provide essential technical information to assist the physician. Responsibilities also include maintaining department supplies and equipment and participating in quality control initiatives.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

1. Education: One of the following:

  1. Completion of a training program in Ultrasonography, Radiologic Technology, or Vascular Technology.
  2. Associate of Science degree or higher.

2. Experience: None required.

3. Completion of initial and ongoing training and competencies specific to the patient population served.

4. Preferred: Two years of experience as a vascular technologist in a hospital or diagnostic imaging clinic.

Licenses and Certifications:

Must possess and maintain American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) certification in:

1. RVT – Registered Vascular Technologist.

2. RVS – Registered Vascular Specialist.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Stay updated on innovations in medical sonography techniques and equipment.

2. Ensure physician orders are obtained for all exams and prioritize STAT calls effectively.

3. Adhere to safety policies and procedures, recognizing crisis situations and taking preventive measures.

4. Follow infection control protocols and maintain cleanliness in the work area.

5. Manage patient reports, including retrieving previous reports and entering charges into the system.

6. Order supplies and assist with departmental reports.

Additional Responsibilities:

1. May handle radiopharmaceuticals and contrast agents as needed.

2. Assist in orienting new staff and supervising students as directed.

3. Uphold the mission and vision of Methodist Healthcare and provide excellent customer service.

4. Comply with safety policies and report unsafe conditions immediately.

5. Adhere to the MHS Code of Conduct and demonstrate ethical behavior.

6. Perform other duties as assigned.
