Job Summary and Qualifications

The Vascular Technologist (sonographer) is responsible for performing diagnostic tests, including arterial and venous Dopplers and vascular imaging, as per physician directives. The technologist applies knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and instrumentation to provide essential information to support the physician's assessments. Responsibilities also include maintaining departmental supplies and equipment, as well as participating in quality control initiatives.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

1. Education: Must meet one of the following criteria:

A. Completion of a training program in:

  1. Ultrasonography
  2. Radiologic Technology
  3. Vascular Technology

B. Associate's degree or higher.

2. Experience: No prior experience required.

3. Completion of initial and ongoing training specific to the patient population served is required.

4. Preferred: Two years of experience as a vascular technologist in a hospital or diagnostic imaging setting.

Licensure and Certification:

Must possess and maintain certification from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in one of the following:

1. RVT – Registered Vascular Technologist

2. RVS – Registered Vascular Specialist

Key Responsibilities:

1. Stay updated on advancements in medical sonography techniques and equipment.

2. Ensure proper physician orders are obtained for all examinations and prioritize urgent requests effectively.

3. Adhere to safety protocols and recognize potential crisis situations, taking appropriate action to mitigate risks.

4. Follow infection control practices and maintain a clean and organized work environment.

5. Manage patient reports, including retrieving previous records, presenting images to physicians, and processing patient charges accurately.

6. Monitor supply inventory and assist with departmental reporting.

Additional Responsibilities:

1. May handle radiopharmaceuticals and contrast agents as needed for diagnostic procedures.

2. Assist in orienting new staff and supervising students as directed.

3. Uphold the mission and vision of Methodist Healthcare and deliver excellent customer service.

4. Comply with safety policies and report any unsafe conditions to supervisors.

5. Maintain ethical standards and adhere to the MHS Code of Conduct.

6. Perform other duties as assigned.
