Position: Community Resource Intern


GENERAL OVERVIEW:

The Community Resource Intern serves as a volunteer leader within the St. Louis Area Foodbank's Ending Hunger Department. This role is pivotal in enhancing our capacity to deliver quality assistance with public benefit applications and supporting broader outreach initiatives, including Food Fairs, Mobile Markets, and Nutrition Education programs. The intern will engage with partner organizations, community members across the 26 counties served by the Foodbank, and staff members. Additionally, the intern may participate in various strategic initiatives aimed at promoting growth and success within the organization.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist clients with public benefit applications via telephone through our Google SNAP Program and other community referrals.
  • Enter public benefit applications into the Oasis database.
  • Identify and reach out to potential new community organizations for outreach, focusing on underrepresented areas within the Foodbank's service territory.
  • Collaborate with Community Resource Coordinators to organize and participate in outreach events aimed at community engagement and public benefit assistance.
  • Work alongside the Equitable Access team to provide support during community outreach events and food distribution activities.
  • Assist all Programs staff with additional tasks as assigned.
  • To gain comprehensive knowledge of the Foodbank and its operations, the intern may volunteer in various program areas, including but not limited to:
    • Community Resource Team activities in the field.
    • Outreach for nutrition and wellness education.
    • Engagement in the Foodbank's Volunteer Center.
    • Participation in food distributions and Food on the Move programming.
    • School Markets.
    • Accompanying SLAFB Drivers on deliveries.
    • Reviewing articles and webinars related to food insecurity, food bank operations, and advocacy.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university.
  • Experience in non-profit organizations is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with strong interpersonal abilities.
  • Capability to collaborate effectively with diverse personalities.
  • Proficient in Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other web-based applications.
  • General understanding of evaluation methods, program development, and logic models.
  • Able to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Possess reliable transportation and valid licenses.
  • Demonstrated passion for the Foodbank's mission and alignment with its Core Values: Stewardship, Teamwork, Agility, and Respect.
  • Physical demands include the ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

TIME COMMITMENT:


The ideal candidate should be available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. This internship offers flexibility, and the Community Resource Intern will coordinate with their supervisor to establish a schedule that meets academic requirements or personal development goals. Adjustments to the total hours may be made as necessary, and community events will be scheduled accordingly.


OBJECTIVES FOR THE COMMUNITY RESOURCE INTERN:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of local and national issues related to hunger and poverty, along with community and governmental responses.
  • Develop or enhance facilitation and leadership skills.
  • Acquire skills in data collection and community development for areas with limited food access.
  • Engage with community members to provide support, empathy, and identify their nutritional needs.
