Overview

We are in search of a skilled Radiation Oncology Coding Specialist to join our esteemed Revenue Cycle Management team, dedicated to the Radiation Oncology and Imaging sectors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately input codes to facilitate the transfer of data to billing files for reimbursement, adhering to Medicare and payer regulations.
  • Examine medical records and extract clinical data by assigning codes (CPT, HCPCS) from patient documentation in collaboration with healthcare providers.
  • Assess and interpret patient medical records to correctly assign procedure codes and modifiers, focusing on specialized services such as diagnostic and interventional radiology, as well as radiation therapy.
  • Evaluate documentation to identify any deficiencies that may require clinician review and clarification, in accordance with AAPC standards.
  • Stay informed on regulatory and payer updates that impact diagnostic and procedural coding.
  • Investigate and resolve coding-related system edits, payer rejections, and insurance denials.
  • Identify trends in system edits, payer rejections, and insurance denials to enhance policies and procedures.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding practices through ongoing education and resource material review.
  • Achieve or surpass departmental production and accuracy benchmarks.
  • Exhibit effective communication skills through various channels including phone, system notes, and email.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail with a commitment to quality in task execution.
  • Utilize critical thinking and problem-solving skills to dissect situations and identify core issues.

  • Conduct daily coding tasks to ensure the successful processing and payment of claims.
  • Review patient medical charts and documentation for accuracy, promptly reporting any missing or incomplete information to the provider organization.
  • Perform audits on previously coded claims batches, making necessary corrections to ensure precision.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of coding experience.
  • At least 2 years of specialized experience in Radiation Oncology coding.
  • Some college education is preferred.
  • Possession of a current nationally recognized coding credential, such as CPC, COC, CCS, or CCS-P.
  • Additional certifications (e.g., CHOC, CEMC) are advantageous.
  • Comprehensive understanding of ICD-10, CPT (including E/M leveling), HCPCS, modifiers, medical terminology, and anatomy & physiology.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams) and EMR applications (e.g., EPIC, CERNER) is a plus.
  • Ensure the accuracy of billing codes in accordance with AAPC/AMA guidelines and payer updates, confirming all billing codes are current and valid.
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively engage with stakeholders at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to work under general supervision.
  • Capability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple tasks and handling confidential information effectively.
  • Exhibit excellent telephone etiquette, presentation skills, and problem resolution abilities.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Fully understand HIPAA regulations, treating all patient information with the utmost confidentiality and taking necessary precautions to secure this data.
  • Preferred hybrid work model; must be based in California.
