Organizational Purpose

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is dedicated to the preservation, management, and advocacy of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.

Role Summary
Under the guidance of the Regional Manager, the Crew Supervisor will oversee the execution of trail construction, renovation, and land stewardship initiatives. This role involves leading and inspiring trail crews composed of staff and volunteers. The Crew Supervisor is tasked with managing crew dynamics and promoting a positive work environment through effective teamwork. This position will provide essential leadership for the crew, ensure adherence to safety protocols, and maintain communication with partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute trail construction, renovation, and maintenance tasks in collaboration with A.T clubs and partner organizations.
  • Assess logistical requirements beforehand to guarantee that necessary tools, equipment, materials, and resources are available for project completion.
  • Train volunteer and/or staff crew members in best practices for trail design, construction, renovation, and maintenance in accordance with ATC and land management agency standards.
  • Ensure safe and hygienic conditions at work sites and camps, transport crews securely, and respond effectively to emergencies.
  • Foster an inclusive atmosphere where all crew members feel valued, motivated, and safe, encouraging participation and contributions from everyone.
  • Follow directives from designated supervisors regarding duties, logistics, timelines, and projects, while submitting biweekly timesheets and weekly project reports.
  • Ensure that procurement of food, supplies, and materials complies with ATC's financial protocols.
  • Travel on foot across challenging terrain and long distances while carrying equipment in potentially adverse weather conditions.
  • Assist the Basecamp Coordinator with volunteer transportation, orientation, routine camp upkeep, or other assigned tasks.

Qualifications

  • Two or more seasons of experience in front/backcountry camping or outdoor work.
  • At least one season of leadership experience in trail crew management.
  • Experience in trail construction or renovation, including building sidehill, stone steps, log steps, improving drainage, and addressing erosion.
  • Ability to manage all aspects of a trail crew effectively.
  • Good mental and physical health, with the capacity to hike up to 10 miles daily in steep, mountainous terrain.
  • Commitment to the management and resource protection efforts of the ATC.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication skills with individuals, groups, and partners.
  • Ability to live independently and work in remote areas with limited oversight.
  • Extensive hiking and outdoor experience.
  • Experience working with volunteers from diverse backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Basic understanding of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy's cooperative management system is preferred.
  • Comfortable working outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions.
  • Leave No Trace Trainer or Master Educator certification is desirable; awareness training will be provided.
  • Current Wilderness First-Aid or higher and CPR certification is preferred; training will be provided.
  • Willingness to engage in additional required training, including USFS chainsaw & crosscut saw certification, WFR/WFA, advanced rockwork, rigging, and safe driving.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Regular computer use is necessary; familiarity with Microsoft Office, Office 365, APD, NetSuite, Salesforce, ESRI GIS, NPS database, and Google applications is required.
  • May encounter hazardous physical conditions and seasonal exposure to extreme weather, including rain, snow, humidity, intense heat, and sunlight.
  • Must be capable of hiking for extended periods, standing for long durations, performing moderate lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds over rough terrain.
  • A valid driver's license is required; access to a personal vehicle is strongly preferred.
  • Possible exposure to ticks, pests, and hazards typical of backcountry environments.
