The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is dedicated to the stewardship, management, and advocacy of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.
Role Summary:
Each year, we seek highly skilled seasonal staff to assist in the execution of essential trail upkeep, significant restoration, and rerouting initiatives. The Basecamp Coordinator plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth functioning of our crew programs. This position involves hosting volunteers and managing all necessary tasks to facilitate the effective operation of our crew camps, which includes welcoming and orienting volunteers, procuring food and supplies, aiding in vehicle maintenance, and supporting field activities.
Candidates should exhibit a strong sense of responsibility, initiative, and self-motivation. The ability to work independently with minimal oversight, as well as collaboratively within a team, is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design meal plans for crew activities both in the field and at base camp, overseeing meal preparation during crew stays.
- Efficiently procure food and supplies for crews, adhering to established purchasing protocols.
- Maintain basic facility operations, including minor repairs, cleaning, and submitting maintenance requests.
- Assist Crew Leaders with logistics related to vehicle and tool maintenance, providing additional support as needed.
- Help manage program-related tasks, including financial tracking, monitoring expenditure patterns, and ensuring budget compliance.
- Maintain safe, clean, and environmentally responsible conditions at the crew base camp.
- Foster a welcoming and positive environment for crew staff, volunteers, and partners.
- Welcome and orient new crew members to base camp facilities, crew culture, and the mission of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.
- Coordinate transportation arrangements for volunteers between designated locations and base camp.
- Adhere to directives from supervisors regarding responsibilities, logistics, schedules, and project requirements, submitting biweekly reports and timesheets as necessary.
Qualifications:
- Experience in front/backcountry camping or outdoor work for two or more seasons.
- At least one season of leadership experience in trail crew or camp coordination.
- Ability to oversee all support functions of a trail crew program.
- Good physical and mental health.
- Commitment to the mission and resource protection efforts of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.
- Demonstrated capability to work independently.
- Effective communication skills with individuals, groups, and partners.
- Ability to live autonomously and work with minimal supervision.
- Strong background in hiking and outdoor activities.
- Experience engaging with volunteers from diverse backgrounds and skill levels.
- Basic understanding of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy's cooperative management system is preferred.
- Comfortable working outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions.
- Current First-Aid and CPR certification or higher medical qualification.
- Willingness to engage in additional required training, such as safe driving.
- Willingness to undergo background checks as required.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Regular computer use is necessary; familiarity with Microsoft Office, Office 365, APD, NetSuite, Salesforce, and Google applications is expected.
- Potential exposure to hazardous conditions and extreme weather, including rain, snow, humidity, and intense heat.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform moderate lifting tasks.
- A valid driver's license is required; access to a personal vehicle is strongly preferred.
- Possible exposure to outdoor hazards, including ticks and pests.
