Position Overview
Reporting to the Regional Manager, the Assistant Crew Leader plays a vital role in co-managing trail construction and maintenance initiatives alongside the Crew Leader. This position is responsible for guiding and inspiring trail crews, which may include both volunteers and staff members. The Crew Leader will oversee behavior management and cultivate a positive team environment through effective collaboration. This role emphasizes safety protocols and communication with various stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute trail construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects in partnership with local trail clubs and associated agencies.
- Collaborate with the Crew Leader to assess logistical requirements in advance, ensuring that necessary tools, equipment, materials, and personnel are ready for project execution.
- Train and guide volunteer and staff crew members in best practices for trail design, construction, and maintenance, adhering to standards set by the ATC and land management authorities.
- Maintain safe and hygienic conditions at work sites and field camps, ensuring safe transportation for crews and appropriate responses to emergencies.
- Foster an inclusive atmosphere where all crew members feel valued, motivated, and safe, encouraging participation and recognizing contributions.
- Follow directives from the designated Crew Leader or supervisors regarding duties, logistics, and project timelines, while submitting biweekly timesheets and weekly reports.
- Assume Crew Leader responsibilities in their absence as needed.
- Manage the procurement of food, supplies, and materials in accordance with ATC financial guidelines.
- Navigate challenging terrain on foot while carrying equipment, even in adverse weather conditions.
- Assist the Basecamp Coordinator with volunteer logistics, orientation, and routine maintenance tasks as required.
Qualifications
- Minimum of two seasons of experience in outdoor work or camping.
- At least one season of leadership experience in trail crew settings.
- Experience in trail construction and rehabilitation, including building sidehill trails, stone steps, and erosion control measures.
- Ability to effectively manage all aspects of a trail crew.
- Good physical and mental health, with the capability to hike up to 10 miles daily in rugged terrain.
- Commitment to the conservation efforts of the ATC.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with individuals and groups.
- Ability to live and work in remote locations with limited oversight.
- Extensive hiking and outdoor experience.
- Experience engaging with volunteers from diverse backgrounds and skill levels.
- Basic understanding of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy's cooperative management system is preferred.
- Comfortable working outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions.
- Desirable qualifications include Leave No Trace Trainer or Master Educator status; training will be provided.
- Current Wilderness First-Aid or higher and CPR certification is preferred; training will be provided.
- Willingness to engage in additional required training, including chainsaw certification and advanced rockwork.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Regular computer use is necessary; familiarity with Microsoft Office, Salesforce, and GIS applications is beneficial.
- Exposure to hazardous conditions and extreme weather may occur.
- Ability to hike for extended periods, perform moderate lifting, and carry up to 50 pounds over rough terrain.
- A valid driver's license is required; access to a personal vehicle is preferred.
- Potential exposure to natural hazards typical of backcountry environments.
