Claims Counsel Job Description

Kinsale Insurance Company is a leading Excess & Surplus lines insurer specializing in hard-to-place, small to medium sized commercial accounts. As a Claims Counsel, you will play a critical role in handling a wide variety of Casualty claims under the direction of a Claims Supervisor.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough investigations for all aspects of the claims process, ensuring accurate and timely resolution.
  • Determine liability, evaluate exposure, and negotiate claims to resolution, utilizing strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Investigate and analyze coverage, making coverage determinations and drafting correspondence to policyholders and stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and information in claim files, ensuring seamless communication with policyholders and other stakeholders.
  • Handle litigated claims filed against insureds, appointing, directing, and managing defense counsel to drive litigation toward resolution.
  • Participate in and attend mediations and/or trials to facilitate fair resolution of claims.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional work experience in claims handling or a related field.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with policyholders, stakeholders, and defense counsel.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate complex claims data and make informed decisions.
  • Strong organization and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple claims and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment, with a focus on teamwork and open communication.
  • Ability to multi-task, with a focus on prioritizing multiple claims and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong negotiation skills, with the ability to effectively negotiate claims to resolution.
  • Proficiency in assigning and directing investigations, with a focus on thorough and accurate claims handling.
  • Functional knowledge of contracts, including risk transfer provisions, with a focus on accurate and timely claims resolution.
  • Experience handling litigation, with a focus on driving claims toward resolution.
  • Exhibit skills in Microsoft Office products, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Education and Certifications:
  • Four-year college degree is required, with a focus on a related field such as law or insurance.
  • J.D. Degree is preferred, with a focus on claims handling and litigation.
  • Maintain license to practice law and remain current with all CLE credits.
