Position Overview

The KU Natural History Museum is looking for a personable and detail-oriented university student to take on the role of Student Outreach & Events Assistant. This position is supervised by the Outreach & Engagement Coordinator and supports the Associate Director of Informal Science Education. The Student O&E Assistant will assist in delivering themed educational programs to various groups (such as scouts and after-school science clubs) and play a key role in organizing and executing museum events like Discovery Days and Pop Up Science programs.

Applicants should have availability during weekdays, evenings, and weekends.

Job Responsibilities

The Student Outreach & Events Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Facilitating outreach initiatives and events, including scout badge workshops, community group visits, and museum programs like Discovery Days.
  • Assisting in the planning and development of outreach initiatives and events.
  • Supporting the Outreach & Engagement Coordinator in building relationships with a diverse range of individuals, community organizations, and other stakeholders.
  • Representing the museum in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Being an enthusiastic, adaptable, and supportive member of the KU Natural History Museum team, capable of working both collaboratively and independently.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • 50% -- Facilitating interactive activities; managing visitor groups (including children, parents, and university students); setting up and moving materials, specimens, tables, and chairs; effectively communicating information and addressing inquiries; interacting with the public professionally; ensuring visitor safety during events and programs.
  • 35% -- Generating innovative and creative ideas for programs and events.
  • 10% -- Maintaining clear communication with the Outreach & Engagement Coordinator regarding program needs and planning, as well as work schedule availability and changes.
  • 5% -- Assisting with the observation and documentation of event/program participation and feedback.

Required Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Kansas, enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours during the semester of appointment.
  • Ability to speak confidently in front of both large and small audiences.
  • Ability to engage with individuals of all ages, particularly children, with enthusiasm and patience.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills demonstrated through application materials and interviews.
  • Capability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Availability to work 8-10 hours per week, with flexible hours during regular workdays, some evenings, and weekends.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Successful completion of a mandatory background check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong interest in natural history, science, or organismal biology.
  • Previous experience in informal science education settings.
  • At least two years remaining at the University of Kansas.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, lift objects up to 30 lbs, and work outdoors during various weather conditions.
  • Willingness to travel for events throughout the state.

Work Schedule & Location:
At least 5 office hours per week working with the Outreach & Engagement Coordinator, plus an additional 3-5 hours per week on weekends and possibly during semester breaks assisting with museum events and programs. Hours are flexible and will vary slightly based on the events schedule. Flexibility on weekends for events and programs is essential.
