POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision, this role involves assisting in various educational activities and supporting children with special learning requirements. The position includes performing clerical tasks and providing support to instructional staff, as well as other related duties as needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support instructional staff in delivering educational materials and conducting learning exercises.
  • Assist individual students and small groups with special learning needs to reinforce educational activities.
  • Monitor and aid students in practice and study sessions following instructional lessons.
  • Guide students towards safe learning and play activities while promoting appropriate social behaviors.
  • Help manage students with challenging behaviors using positive reinforcement and other effective strategies.
  • Assist in preparing instructional materials tailored to the needs of students with special requirements.
  • Maintain various records, including confidential student information and medical data.
  • Operate and assist students with mobility equipment and educational tools.
  • Support students in using various instructional aids and computer-assisted learning programs.
  • Monitor and assist in addressing specific learning challenges.
  • Provide assistance with medical procedures under the guidance of authorized personnel.
  • Perform basic first aid as needed, including support for students experiencing medical emergencies.
  • Observe and monitor students with physical disabilities and request necessary assistance when required.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and positive learning environment.
  • Assist with personal care tasks, including toileting support.
  • Engage students in skill-building activities for those with language and hearing challenges.
  • Carry out other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of child development and behavior, particularly for students with special needs.
  • Behavior management techniques for students with control issues.
  • Proficient in English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Basic arithmetic skills.
  • Record-keeping and retrieval methods.

Skills:

  • Exhibit a patient and understanding attitude towards students of various ages, especially those with specialized needs.
  • Effectively manage challenging behaviors and guide students towards acceptable social interactions.
  • Communicate clearly in both oral and written forms.
  • Perform routine clerical tasks and operate educational and office equipment.
  • Learn to utilize diverse instructional materials to enhance the educational environment.
  • Follow oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Establish cooperative relationships with students and staff.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands of this position include:

  • Regularly lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing between 50 to 75 pounds.
  • Primarily sitting, with occasional walking or standing.
  • Ability to perceive sounds, see near and far, and perform manual tasks with dexterity.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

A combination of experience and training that would likely provide the necessary knowledge and skills is acceptable. A typical pathway includes:

Education:

Completion of the twelfth grade is required, along with one of the following:

a) An Associate's degree or higher, or

b) At least two years (48 semester units) of study at an accredited institution, or

c) A rigorous academic assessment demonstrating the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics.
