Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Police Officer to join our team at the Yurok Tribe. As a Police Officer, you will be responsible for maintaining law and order, protecting life and property, and enforcing tribal ordinances.

Key Responsibilities
  • Patrol assigned areas to ensure the security of life and property, observe situations, and deter crime by providing high visibility.
  • Respond to suspicious activities and answer emergency calls for service.
  • Enforce tribal ordinances, issue verbal warnings and citations, pursue and apprehend suspects, and request assistance as required.
  • Interview suspected violators of the law, giving careful and timely consideration to their constitutional rights, resulting in lawfully obtained incriminating statements.
  • Attempt to locate witnesses of reported crimes and interview them for pertinent information.
  • Evaluate crime scenes, establish the elements of a particular crime, and recognize physical evidence.
  • Follow up on cases, resulting in offender apprehension and property recovery.
  • Write legible reports and other documents as required, prepare reports and other required documents using correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Coordinate crime scene control and investigation, including interviews and interrogations, identification of witnesses, photographing, overseeing collection and preservation of physical evidence, and maintaining the chain of evidence.
  • Restore order, protect life and property, maintain peace at public gatherings, and in conflict situations.
  • Prepare and document cases, complete reports and records, and prepare and maintain other logs and records.
  • Transport criminals to courts, hospitals, and various other locations, and transport other involved parties as assigned.
  • Serve civil papers to local residents as assigned, research and locate persons to be served.
  • Participate in special projects, such as drug enforcement, livestock investigations, and boating regulations.
  • Investigate traffic accidents and provide traffic and crowd control as necessary.
  • Retrieve, identify, and return found property and/or evidence to owners.
  • Provide emergency aid and assistance to incapacitated persons and request additional response.
  • Provide information, directions, and other services and assistance to the public, speak to individuals and groups explaining the law, police actions taken, safety and crime prevention measures, and provide safety information to businesses.
  • Appear in court and testify as required.
  • Maintain assigned equipment and vehicle in clean, serviceable condition.
  • Enforce tribal ordinances.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of investigations and cases, and protect the privacy and constitutional rights of individuals.
Requirements
  • Must possess a Basic Academy Certificate from a California POST-approved police academy or equivalent.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Candidates with equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience will be considered.
Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, make quick decisions, and respond to emergency situations. The Police Officer must be able to lift or carry unconscious, injured, or combative people, and must have a valid telephone service.
