Medford Massachusetts, United States Tufts University Full time

Overview:

The Department of Biology at Tufts University is committed to offering students a cohesive and thorough understanding of biological systems while providing opportunities for undergraduates to engage in innovative biological research across various fields including molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, physiology, ecology, animal behavior, and conservation biology.

The Department actively engages in research and educational programs on the Medford campus and in diverse field settings, training and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, as well as post-doctoral researchers.

Role Responsibilities:
This position involves a full-time commitment as a research technician.

The initial appointment will be for a duration of one year, with the possibility of extension based on funding availability and performance.

The Hussain Laboratory, situated within the Department of Biology at Tufts University, is in search of a motivated and enthusiastic entry-level research technician.

The lab will be operational in a newly renovated research facility on the Medford campus.

Fatima Aysha Hussain, an Assistant Professor with expertise in environmental microbiology and human microbiome studies, will lead the lab's focus on the ecology and evolution of the vaginal microbiome, particularly examining microbe-microbe interactions and phage-driven evolution within the bacterial community.

The technician will engage in various wet-lab and dry-lab projects that explore bacterial and phage interactions within the vaginal ecosystem.

Additional responsibilities will include assisting in the establishment of the new lab environment, which encompasses ordering supplies and equipment, organizing samples, setting up computational resources, and planning the utilization of the space.

With supervision, the candidate will design and conduct laboratory experiments, analyze data, maintain detailed records, and communicate findings to the Principal Investigator and lab team members. Responsibilities will encompass executing research projects and managing laboratory operations.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Conducting anaerobic bacteriology
  • Designing and executing bacteriophage interaction experiments
  • Developing laboratory protocols
  • Ordering laboratory supplies and assisting in equipment setup
  • Establishing computational storage and maintaining clusters
  • Running existing pipelines for genomic data analysis using Python and R
  • Analyzing, documenting, and visualizing results for publications and grant proposals
  • Participating in and presenting at lab meetings and journal clubs
The ideal candidate should possess at least a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., biology, microbiology, bioinformatics). Prior experience with anaerobic culturing, molecular techniques, sequencing, and data analysis is preferred.

Effective communication skills, problem-solving abilities, project coordination, and the capacity to thrive in a collaborative lab environment are essential.

The Hussain laboratory values diversity and inclusivity, fostering an academic and research atmosphere that encourages professional development and diverse career paths.

Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:
Knowledge and skills typically acquired through a Bachelor's degree in a scientific field, along with at least one year of practical laboratory experience.

Experience in one or more of the following experimental techniques: bacterial culturing, PCR, qPCR, DNA/RNA extraction, sequencing library preparation, or molecular cloning.

Analytical skills to address problems requiring basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles.

An interest in or experience with computational biology tools (Python, R, Bioconductor).

Preferred Qualifications:
Specific experience with anaerobic microbiology or phage assays.

Experience using Python, R, and Unix.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:
This position involves working with and being exposed to hazardous chemicals and materials, necessitating adherence to proper safety protocols. The employee may occasionally encounter fumes or airborne particles, and the noise level in the work environment is generally moderate.
