Job Summary

As a Substation and Power Equipment Supervisor at BrightRidge, you will oversee the day-to-day operations and personnel in the Substation and Power Equipment area. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure seamless integration between the substations, power equipment, and the SCADA system. You will provide training and assistance with power equipment, maintain Substation and Power Equipment Documents and Drawings Database, and serve as a liaison for other utilities, vendors, providers, outside entities, and intradepartmental teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain responsibility for continued safe and proper operation of the substations and power equipment on the distribution system.
  • Serve as liaison for other utilities, vendors, providers, outside entities, and intradepartmental teams.
  • Update equipment and seek improvements for operations and processes.
  • Utilize experience in signaling and controlled infrastructure of electric utility switching.
  • Develop and distribute system reports and analyze technical data.
  • Make recommendations for system improvements.
  • Assist in the restoration of power outages.
  • Maintain equipment service records, upgrades, modifications, and drawing updates.
  • Direct work to be performed and schedule time and personnel as required.
  • Ability to maintain reliable, predictable, and reasonable attendance.
  • Analyze test results and interpret electrical diagrams to locate defective relay.
  • Analyze test data to determine performance characteristics of relays and the effect of the system modifications on relay performance.
  • Analyze post-fault data, including metering and transient recorder data, aid in the investigation of electrical events, and provide system restoration recommendations.
  • Perform complex electrical calculations as required to set and program protective relays, SCADA, and metering systems.
  • Utilize system studies to evaluate or design protective relay and substation control systems for appropriate protection and coordination.
  • Develop protective relaying testing and commissioning plans and execute those plans.
  • Review and approve testing and commissioning reports completed by others.
  • Promote and perform quality reviews of design in accordance with sound engineering principles to ensure design quality, compliance with current standards, safety requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Serve as the technical expert for operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and safety investigations associated with power equipment and distribution systems.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license from the state of residence.
  • Work assigned Supervisor on-call duty.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.
  • Maintain vehicle assigned.
  • Must be available for after-hours work which would include working a fair share of all necessary overtime.
Requirements
  • Must possess leader essentials, attributes, and behaviors.
  • Extensive knowledge of principles and application of protective relays.
  • Must possess the ability to troubleshoot PC and network problems.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft applications, operating systems, and networking basics.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the Survalent SCADA system.
  • Must have an in-depth understanding of electrical drawings, symbols, and terminology. Must possess an understanding of database structures.
  • Must possess knowledge of current communications protocols, i.e., DNP, Modbus, and more.
  • Must be able to read, write, and understand electrical drawings.
  • Must possess an understanding of PLC and ladder logic.
  • Must be able to design and create PC networks.
  • Must be able to operate and develop HMI, GUI, Visual Basic, and Batch files.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Broad technical background with extensive experience in generation, transmission, and distribution systems, stations, and equipment.
Physical Requirements

Position requires constant handling, balancing, vision, talking, hearing, depth perception, and arm/hand use for machine control operation. Requires frequent carrying, forward bending, standing, sitting, reaching, fine manipulation, and simple grasp. Must occasionally lift up to 10 pounds.

Working Conditions

Most work is performed in an indoor climate-controlled office environment with appropriate lighting. Also works in secured computer room. Trips into the field and into substations may require ambulating on uneven terrain and exposure to voltage.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and/or substantial work experience in an electric utility engineering environment.
  • Five years work experience in SCADA programming a plus.
  • Five years work experience with electric utility substation maintenance.
  • Must possess or obtain additional certification courses as required.
  • Must agree to continue education and remain current in technology and related fields.
  • Must pass a color blindness screening.
