POSITION SUMMARY:
The Substation Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily functions and staff within the Substation and Power Equipment domain. This role ensures the effective integration of substations, power apparatus, and the SCADA system, while also providing training and support related to power equipment. Additionally, the supervisor maintains the database of Substation and Power Equipment Documents and Drawings.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Accountable for the safe and efficient operation of substations and power equipment within the distribution network.
- Acts as a point of contact for external utilities, vendors, and internal teams.
- Implements updates to equipment and identifies opportunities for operational enhancements.
- Applies expertise in signaling and controlled infrastructure for electric utility switching.
- Generates and disseminates system reports while analyzing technical data.
- Recommends improvements for system efficiency.
- Assists in the management of power outage restorations.
- Keeps detailed records of equipment service, upgrades, modifications, and drawing revisions.
- Directs work assignments and schedules personnel as necessary.
- Maintains consistent and reliable attendance.
- Evaluates test results and interprets electrical schematics to identify faulty relays.
- Assesses test data to understand relay performance and the impact of system changes.
- Reviews post-fault data to assist in investigating electrical incidents and offers restoration strategies.
- Conducts complex electrical calculations for setting and programming protective relays, SCADA, and metering systems.
- Utilizes system studies to design protective relay and substation control systems for optimal protection and coordination.
- Creates and executes testing and commissioning plans for protective relaying.
- Reviews and validates testing and commissioning reports prepared by others.
- Ensures design quality through rigorous reviews in accordance with engineering standards and safety protocols.
- Serves as the technical authority for operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and safety investigations related to power equipment and distribution systems.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
- Must hold a valid driver's license from the state of residence.
- Participate in on-call supervisory duties as assigned.
- Perform other responsibilities as required.
- Maintain the assigned vehicle.
- Be available for after-hours work, including necessary overtime.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Possess essential leadership qualities and behaviors.
- Extensive understanding of protective relay principles and applications.
- Ability to troubleshoot computer and network issues.
- Familiarity with Microsoft applications, operating systems, and networking fundamentals.
- Knowledge of the Survalent SCADA system.
- Comprehensive understanding of electrical schematics, symbols, and terminology, along with database structures.
- Knowledge of current communication protocols, such as DNP and Modbus.
- Proficient in reading, writing, and interpreting electrical diagrams.
- Understanding of PLC and ladder logic.
- Capability to design and establish PC networks.
- Experience in operating and developing HMI, GUI, Visual Basic, and Batch files.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Broad technical expertise with significant experience in generation, transmission, and distribution systems, stations, and equipment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This position requires frequent handling, balancing, vision, communication, depth perception, and manual dexterity for machine control. It also involves frequent carrying, bending, standing, sitting, reaching, fine manipulation, and simple grasping. Occasionally, the role may require lifting up to 10 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Most tasks are performed in a climate-controlled office setting with adequate lighting. Some duties may require fieldwork in substations, which may involve navigating uneven terrain and exposure to electrical voltage.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or substantial experience in an electric utility engineering context.
- Five years of experience in SCADA programming is advantageous.
- Five years of experience in electric utility substation maintenance is preferred.
- Must obtain additional certification courses as necessary.
- Commitment to ongoing education and staying current with technology and related fields.
- Must pass a color vision screening.
