Position Overview

The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is actively seeking applications for the role of Motor Equipment Operator II within the Public Works Asphalt Crew.

This position entails skilled operations of moderately complex specialized maintenance and construction vehicles, performing related tasks as necessary.

The role requires a commitment to the safe and efficient use of assigned machinery. Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate heavier and more intricate equipment compared to lower classifications.
  • Interchangeably utilize various types of machinery within this category.
  • Supervise one or two laborers as needed.
  • Drive trucks and operate equipment for drainage maintenance and construction tasks.
  • Engage in site grading, pipeline installation, and road construction activities.
  • Participate in snow removal operations as required.

While the work may be conducted with a degree of independence, a supervisor will routinely evaluate the quality, quantity, safety, and maintenance of the equipment utilized.


Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Comprehensive understanding of traffic regulations and laws governing automotive equipment operation; familiarity with the operational and repair characteristics of heavy machinery and similar public works equipment; knowledge of the component parts, operational principles, and maintenance requirements of construction and maintenance equipment; awareness of the City layout, including streets and alleys; capability to service various types of heavy machinery and perform minor repairs; ability to comprehend and execute oral and written instructions and prepare necessary reports; proficiency in operating moderately complex construction and maintenance equipment; physical strength and agility to manage equipment over rough terrain, occasionally under challenging weather conditions.


Qualifications:

A high school diploma or GED is required, along with some experience in operating and performing routine maintenance on trucks or specialized automotive equipment at the level of Motor Equipment Operator I; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Candidates must possess a valid Class "B" CDL issued by the State of Tennessee or be able to obtain one within a specified timeframe after employment. A post-offer DOT physical, drug screening, and background check are mandatory.
