Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The role involves overseeing daily activities and staff within the Substation and Power Equipment sector. This position ensures effective integration of substations, power apparatus, and the SCADA system. Responsibilities include providing training and support for power equipment, as well as maintaining the Substation and Power Equipment Documentation and Drawings Database.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Accountable for the safe and efficient operation of substations and power equipment within the distribution network.
  • Acts as a point of contact for other utilities, vendors, external organizations, and internal teams.
  • Implements equipment updates and seeks operational enhancements.
  • Applies expertise in signaling and controlled infrastructure related to electric utility switching.
  • Generates and disseminates system reports while analyzing technical data.
  • Recommends improvements for system efficiency.
  • Assists in managing power outage restorations.
  • Keeps records of equipment service, upgrades, modifications, and drawing revisions.
  • Directs tasks and schedules personnel as necessary.
  • Maintains consistent and reliable attendance.
  • Evaluates test results and interprets electrical schematics to identify faulty relays.
  • Assesses test data to understand relay performance characteristics and the impact of system changes.
  • Examines post-fault data, including metering and transient recorder information, to assist in investigating electrical incidents and provides recommendations for system restoration.
  • Conducts complex electrical calculations for setting and programming protective relays, SCADA, and metering systems.
  • Utilizes system studies to design protective relay and substation control systems ensuring proper protection and coordination.
  • Creates and executes testing and commissioning plans for protective relaying.
  • Reviews and endorses testing and commissioning reports produced by others.
  • Encourages and conducts quality assessments of designs in line with sound engineering principles to guarantee compliance with current standards, safety protocols, and industry best practices.
  • Serves as the technical authority for operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and safety evaluations related to power equipment and distribution systems.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • Must hold a valid driver's license from the state of residence.
  • Participate in on-call supervisory duties as assigned.
  • Perform other tasks as required or directed.
  • Maintain the assigned vehicle.
  • Availability for after-hours work, including a fair share of necessary overtime.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrates essential leadership qualities and behaviors.
  • In-depth knowledge of protective relay principles and applications.
  • Ability to troubleshoot computer and network issues.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft applications, operating systems, and basic networking.
  • Knowledge of the Survalent SCADA system.
  • Comprehensive understanding of electrical schematics, symbols, and terminology, along with database structures.
  • Knowledge of current communication protocols, such as DNP and Modbus.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend electrical diagrams.
  • Understanding of PLC and ladder logic.
  • Capability to design and establish PC networks.
  • Proficient in operating and developing HMI, GUI, Visual Basic, and Batch files.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Broad technical expertise with extensive experience in generation, transmission, and distribution systems, stations, and equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position requires frequent handling, balancing, visual acuity, verbal communication, auditory perception, depth perception, and manual dexterity for machine control. Involves frequent carrying, bending, standing, sitting, reaching, fine manipulation, and simple grasping. Must occasionally lift items weighing up to 10 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Most tasks are performed in a climate-controlled office setting with appropriate lighting. Additional work may occur in secured computer rooms and field trips to substations, which may involve navigating uneven terrain and exposure to electrical voltage.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or substantial experience in an electric utility engineering context.
  • Five years of experience in SCADA programming is advantageous.
  • Five years of experience in electric utility substation maintenance.
  • Must possess or obtain additional certification courses as necessary.
  • Commitment to ongoing education and staying current with technology and related fields.
  • Must pass a color blindness screening.
