Position Title: Senior Vice President of Strategic Communications and Events

Salary: $200,000 - $215,000

Position Overview:

The Senior Vice President of Strategic Communications and Events will spearhead the formulation, execution, and leadership of a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy for the Middle East Institute, aimed at amplifying its influence and outreach as the foremost Middle East think tank in North America. This role will also encompass oversight of MEI's events division, ensuring alignment between MEI's extensive policy programming and its communication and organizational objectives.

As a vital member of MEI's leadership team, the Senior Vice President will report directly to MEI's Chief Operating Officer. Collaboration with MEI's executive, communications, and events teams, along with its scholars, will be essential to effectively convey MEI's brand, identity, programs, research, and outputs to key stakeholders, including media representatives, U.S. government officials, foreign policy experts, and the diplomatic community. The position will manage a dedicated team of fewer than ten professionals.

Essential Responsibilities:

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Implement the strategic plan for the Communications department, closely aligning with MEI's organizational objectives in collaboration with the executive team.
  • Oversee daily operations of the Institute's communication requirements, including strategic planning with MEI's editorial and communications teams, managing messaging, media outreach, digital media, marketing, crisis communications, and website development.
  • Direct the creation of all print and digital communication materials, including the annual report and program marketing collateral, while supervising MEI's electronic communications such as newsletters, social media, and website content.
  • Lead the development and redesign of MEI's website to enhance user engagement.
  • Supervise the events team responsible for executing all public and private MEI programming, ensuring that event messaging aligns with MEI's policy, marketing, and communication strategies.
  • Actively cultivate and manage relationships with the press to ensure robust media engagement in collaboration with MEI staff responsible for media relations.
  • Lead media initiatives such as editorial meetings, press roundtables, and press conferences to foster high-level media engagement with MEI.
  • Serve as a spokesperson and primary contact for media interactions that promote or influence the organization.
  • Prepare leadership talking points, presentations, and other necessary materials.
  • Enhance MEI's crisis communication strategies and protocols.
  • Introduce innovative communication models to improve MEI's outreach and effectiveness.
  • Coordinate with MEI's HR department to foster strong internal communications.
  • Promote a culture of excellence and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  • Mentor and develop staff through a supportive and collaborative approach.
  • Manage and oversee the communications team, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and timelines to achieve communication and external impact objectives.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in a senior management position within non-profit, government, or corporate sectors.
  • Proven experience and leadership in managing a comprehensive strategic communications, media relations, and marketing program to further an organization's mission and objectives.
  • Experience in planning, writing, editing, and producing newsletters, press releases, annual reports, marketing materials, and other publications.
  • Creative and experienced in utilizing new media technologies to enhance the organization's brand and audience engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively build relationships with top-tier reporters and editors, successfully positioning subject matter for impactful media placements.
  • Strong writing and editing skills across various print and online communication platforms.
  • Innovative thinker with a proven track record of translating strategic ideas into actionable plans and results.
  • Experience in building, mentoring, and coaching a team of communication specialists.
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving abilities, including negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Superior management capabilities; ability to influence and engage both direct and indirect reports and peers.
  • Self-reliant, results-oriented, and a collaborative team player.
  • Energetic, flexible, and proactive with exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, capable of effectively interfacing with senior management and staff.
  • Passion for the mission of the Middle East Institute.
  • Familiarity with foreign policy and the Middle East is preferred.
