The Optical Systems Research Scientist is a pivotal authority in the realm of optics, optical sensors, and related systems, ensuring accurate representation of their functionalities, development, testing, and operational processes in technical discussions. This role encompasses contributions to the formulation and implementation of studies, analyses, algorithms, models, simulations, and various technical initiatives as specified in project goals.

This position requires security clearance and is based onsite.

Key Responsibilities

  • Acts as a technical consultant, providing assistance to both internal teams and external partners, including government entities, on matters related to electro-optical systems.
  • Esteemed for proficiency in electro-optical systems, particularly in ground and space-based surveillance and identification of space objects, addressing visual, near-infrared, and infrared spectral domains, alongside the integration, testing, and calibration of these systems.
  • Offers technical direction to the systems engineering division regarding the development and acquisition of optical payload systems, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Employs cutting-edge technologies and scientific methodologies to drive innovation in electro-optical systems.
  • Gains in-depth understanding of system requirements for assigned projects and the design specifications that fulfill these criteria.
  • Oversees the design and development of optical payload systems and their components.
  • Assists in crafting operational concepts and strategies for electro-optical systems tailored for government clients.
  • Conducts and supervises research on system performance, design enhancement, and system design assessments.
  • Champions stringent engineering practices in research and development activities, with a focus on managing technical risks.
  • Monitors acquisitions related to electro-optical payload system components to ensure cohesive system integration and achievement of mission objectives.
  • Prepares and presents documentation to keep stakeholders informed on project progress and to facilitate discussions with government and industry representatives.
  • Designs and implements tests to verify the optical, mechanical, and electrical integrity of electro-optical system components.
  • Analyzes test results from space electro-optical systems, leading investigations to address any discrepancies.
  • Demonstrates capability for both independent work and collaboration within a diverse, multidisciplinary team, including scientists, engineers, business professionals, and former military personnel.

Qualifications

  • Mandatory: An active, transferable TS/SCI CI Poly U.S. government-issued security clearance prior to commencement.
  • A Master's degree in Science / Applied Photonics.
  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience in electro-optical sensors and systems, encompassing UV, visual, near-infrared, and infrared spectral domains, with a focus on analysis, design, development, fabrication, integration, testing, and operations. Candidates with at least ten (10) years of relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Extensive knowledge of electro-optic processing, characterization, and testing, along with familiarity with the supporting electronics and calibration processes related to electro-optical systems.
  • A solid foundation in various optical systems, including those with passive and active control elements.
