Position Overview: Communications Manager

The Communications Manager at Washington & Jefferson College is essential in steering both internal and external communication strategies. This role involves close collaboration with diverse stakeholders to craft engaging content that boosts brand recognition and embodies the distinctive character of W&J. As an adept user of AP style, you will efficiently gather information and produce a variety of written materials. You will also partner with leadership to manage the creation and dissemination of press releases to media outlets across the country.

In this capacity, you will act as the primary representative for internal communication initiatives, facilitating training sessions on industry best practices and proprietary communication protocols as necessary. Your role will also include assisting in the formulation of new internal communication guidelines and policies. Key responsibilities encompass managing messaging for all W&J audiences, overseeing content across multiple platforms, and coordinating a range of communication materials, including news articles, videos, photos, and social media updates. Additionally, you will play a crucial role in ensuring adherence to the style guide throughout the institution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, edit, and proofread publications in accordance with AP Stylebook and W&J style guidelines.
  • Prepare and distribute press releases and media alerts to local media.
  • Support various departments with writing, editing, and proofreading tasks.
  • Manage media relations, including responding to inquiries and escorting reporters on campus.
  • Assist with crisis communication efforts in collaboration with the administration.
  • Develop and implement communication policies.
  • Conduct training sessions on internal communication practices for W&J community members.
  • Monitor analytics of e-newsletters and internal emails.
  • Oversee the College's social media platforms.
  • Coordinate communication initiatives for the Division of Student Life.
  • Manage internal messaging content.
  • Lead the SGA Communications Committee and mentor student communication groups.
  • Curate campus announcements and emergency communications.
  • Promote campus events through media coverage.
  • Assist in conveying strategies from senior leadership.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Communications, Marketing, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in Public Relations.
  • Experience in higher education and/or agency work (3 years).
  • Proficiency in professional Journalism is advantageous.
  • Preferred experience in student communication, graphic design, and event marketing.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Presentation abilities.
  • Excellent project management capabilities.
  • Proficient in MS Office; knowledge of photo and video-editing tools is a plus.
  • Organization and attention to detail are essential.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position involves supervising student workers and guiding communication committees within the Office of Communication and Marketing, as well as co-leading college-wide committees when required.
