Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Construction Inspector to join our team at the City of Memphis. As a key member of our Engineering Division, you will be responsible for ensuring that construction work and grading on various projects meet the highest standards of quality and compliance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect all phases of construction work and grading on various projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Measure distances to verify accuracy of dimensions of structural installations.
  • Observe work in progress to ensure that procedures followed and materials used conform to specifications.
  • Interpret blueprints and specifications.
  • Record quantities of materials received and used.
  • Maintain a daily diary of construction and inspection activities.
  • Compute monthly estimates of work completed and materials used.
  • Prepare sketches of construction installations that deviate from blueprints and report such changes for incorporation on master blueprints.
  • Drive to various locations to inspect construction sites as needed.
  • Investigate citizen complaints and report back to supervisor of action taken.
  • Consult with property owners and contractors concerning right-of-way agreements.
Requirements
  • High school graduate and three (3) years experience in civil construction work or construction inspections.
  • Any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license as a condition of continued employment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in changing weather conditions.
  • Ability to travel throughout the City to inspect construction sites.
Working Conditions

The majority of work is performed outdoors exposed to changing weather conditions. Work schedule varies depending on the schedule of the construction company. Requires travel throughout the City to inspect construction sites, including sewer lines along the Wolf River. May involve working on Saturdays. Involves contact with contractors and citizens.
