JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, the Animal Care Technician provides exemplary humane treatment for animals housed within the Animal Services. Responsibilities include feeding and caring for animals at the facility, as well as intaking, microchipping, vaccinating, administering medications, and performing humane euthanasia when necessary. The role also involves maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of animal enclosures, ensuring a safe environment for both animals and staff. Given the sensitive nature of this position, discretion and confidentiality are paramount.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Ensures humane treatment and care for animals through proper husbandry practices, sanitation of kennels, and regular feeding and watering.
- Identifies and reports maintenance needs to keep facilities in optimal condition.
- Maintains accurate records for animals and controlled substances in compliance with Federal and State regulations.
- Organizes supplies and storage areas to ensure efficiency and adherence to established protocols.
- Welcomes animals from the public and provides compassionate customer service.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Utilizes technology effectively, including animal management software and office equipment, to streamline operations.
- Directs issues and inquiries to the appropriate personnel.
- Facilitates communication and coordination with rescue partners and the community.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understanding of animal disease symptoms, basic animal behavior, and first aid.
- Familiarity with disease control principles and practices.
- Effective communication skills with colleagues and the public.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Proficiency in microchipping, vaccinating, and performing minor medical procedures.
- Capacity to work effectively in noisy environments.
- Ability to accurately document detailed information.
- Capability to work independently and collaboratively with others.
- Competence in operating various equipment and understanding safety protocols.
- Ability to work in diverse environments, both indoors and outdoors.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain compliance with regulations.
QUALIFYING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent is required. A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is necessary. Candidates must obtain and maintain Euthanasia Certification as per relevant health codes within the specified timeframe of employment.
BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS:
This position mandates successful completion of a Criminal Background Check, Motor Vehicle Review, Drug and Alcohol Testing, Physical Examination, and Human Performance Evaluation.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND SAFETY HAZARDS:
Employees may be exposed to various environmental factors, including chemicals, dust, odors, zoonotic diseases, and aggressive animals. Work hours may vary and include weekends and evenings, with potential rotation within different units based on job requirements.
