Position Overview:

The Pulmonary Function Technologist plays a crucial role in assessing and diagnosing respiratory health through various diagnostic tests. This position is integral to the Outpatient Pulmonary Function Testing Lab at Akron Children's Hospital.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Conduct a range of pulmonary function assessments, including spirometry, lung volume analysis, and diffusion capacity evaluations.
  2. Guide patients and their families on effective breathing techniques, ensuring comfort throughout the testing process.
  3. Regularly calibrate and maintain testing equipment to guarantee precise and dependable results.
  4. Work collaboratively with pulmonologists and healthcare providers to interpret test outcomes and contribute to comprehensive patient care strategies.
  5. Accurately document patient data, test findings, and relevant information in the electronic medical record system.
  6. Provide education to patients and families regarding respiratory health, treatment alternatives, and lifestyle changes.
  7. Adhere to established safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a secure testing environment.
  8. Engage in departmental quality improvement initiatives and demonstrate proficiency in pulmonary function testing software.
  9. Exhibit the necessary knowledge and skills to address the physical, psychological, social, educational, and safety needs of patients across all age groups.
  10. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Technical Expertise: Experience in managing asthma patients, particularly in a pediatric PFT setting, is preferred.
  • Membership in the American Thoracic Society (ATS) is advantageous.
  • Experience in a healthcare environment is preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills are essential.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with electronic medical record systems (e.g., EPIC) is required.
Education and Credentials:
  • Graduate from an accredited School of Respiratory Care.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care in Ohio is mandatory.
  • Must hold a valid Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) license in Ohio.
  • Current Health Care Provider BLS certification is required; CPFT or RPFT, PALS, and ACLS certifications must be obtained within one year of hire and maintained throughout employment.
  • Preferred: Two years of experience as a pediatric RRT and experience in a pediatric PFT lab.
