Job Summary: The Financial Counselor 2-ED assists patients seeking treatment in our Emergency or Advanced Urgent Care departments to navigate the financial process from MSE to discharge or admission. This role contributes to all functions of the financial office, serving as a resource to colleagues. The Financial Counselor verifies benefits, eligibility, and facilitates authorization from payers and medical groups. They obtain pertinent documentation to support authorization requests, maintaining ongoing communication with payers, primary care physicians, and RN service coordinators as necessary. The Financial Counselor creates and executes financial contracts with patients and payers for both Loma Linda University Medical Center facility and LLUHC professional services according to LLUMC policy. These services may be provided for both the LLUMC and LLUCH hospitals. Additional duties include performing other tasks as needed.

Education and Experience: A High School Diploma or GED is required. The Financial Counselor must have a minimum of three years of customer service experience, preferably in hospital-based registration, physician's office, Medical Group registration specializing in Managed Care, Medi-Cal, Medicare, and/or California Children's Services. Experience with Federal, State, and County eligibility regulations is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills: Excellent Customer Service skills are required. The Financial Counselor must be able to write legibly, speak in English with professional quality, deliver the highest level of customer service to all patients, family, internal, and external customers. They must use a computer, printer, and software programs necessary for the position (e.g., Microsoft applications, patient accounting, registration, and insurance eligibility applications). The Financial Counselor must operate/troubleshoot basic office equipment required for the job. They must be able to communicate effectively in English, in person, in writing, and on the telephone, think critically, relate positively, effectively, and professionally with others, provide leadership and supervision, be consistent in following policies, work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure, teach and collaborate, accept direction, work independently and with minimal supervision, perform basic math functions, manage multiple assignments effectively, compose written material, work well under pressure, problem solve, organize and prioritize workload, demonstrate good memory, pay close attention to detail. The Financial Counselor must be able to distinguish colors as necessary, write, hear, read, and speak sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone, identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the workplace, see adequately to read computer screens and written documents necessary for the position.
