Job Definition:


The Recovery Advocate Specialist role at CN Guidance and Counseling Services involves providing support, advocacy, and linkage services to individuals and their affected families in emergency departments due to substance use or overdose. A valid driver's license is required.

Education Requirements:


A high school diploma or equivalent is necessary, with an associate's, undergraduate, or master's degree being a plus. Knowledge of substance use disorders prevention, treatment, and referrals is essential. CRPA or CRPA-Provisional certification is also beneficial.

Experience Required:


Relevant life experience, including personal experience with a disability, history of substance use, or social/emotional challenges, is necessary. This experience will be used to serve as a role model and support the recovery goals of individuals served. A valid driver's license is required.

Duties and Responsibilities:



  1. Engage with individuals on the street and in hospital emergency rooms, developing brief person-centered service plans, providing referrals, and linkages to needed services. Offer support, encouragement, and guidance in linking persons to appropriate services.
  2. Provide outreach, advocacy, mentoring, and recovery support services to those seeking or sustaining recovery. Offer strategies for building recovery capital appropriate to the goals of the individuals being worked with.
  3. Collaborate with Hospital SBIRT Health Coaches to meet with individuals and/or family/significant others at local hospitals ED's or agreed-upon locations if discharged to assess their needs and connect them to treatment and other support services across Nassau and/or Suffolk Counties.
  4. Remain in an active role and provide follow-up on the individual and/or families at 30, 60-, 90-, 120-, and 180-days post-discharge from ED.
  5. Collect necessary data to assist in reporting to funding sources and/or hospital systems.
  6. Act as a liaison between the Program and the communities it serves.
  7. Represent the Program in a professional, knowledgeable manner.
  8. Assist in promoting the Program through information and education about its services to the communities served.
  9. Provide direct outreach to courts, attorneys, hospitals, probation, parole, DSS, CPS, DDP, MDs, Schools, and various other community groups with direct referral back to the Agency and its Program(s) if necessary.
  10. Represent the Program at various community events, such as Narcan Trainings, Fairs, Forums, etc., as possible.
  11. Assist in creating flyers and promotion information with and under the direction of the Program Director(s).
  12. Document and report on contacts made in the community with the Program Director(s) and hospital reporting system. Documentation should include the name of the contact, agency if applicable, address, and phone number, and any other required information.
  13. Complete QI Training during onboarding and participate in QI refresher training as needed.
  14. Facilitate sharing of data with the individuals to whom it applies to facilitate partnered decision-making and to keep clients informed of progress.
  15. Ability to cultivate a culture of inclusion for all employees that respects their individual strengths, views, and experiences. A culture that makes better decisions, drives innovation, and delivers better business results.
  16. Identify and implement quality improvement trainings and activities as part of professional development goals.
  17. Encourage quality improvement processes and provide consistent resources for QI and professional development.
  18. Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for all employees. Demonstrate a commitment to maintaining a safe work environment by following established safety guidelines.
  19. Other duties and assignments as requested by the Team Leader.
