Primary Purpose:

The Retail Cashier Associate position supports the daily operations of the retail environment, operates cash registers, performs associated cashiering duties, and provides customer service to staff, students, and visitors. Assists other retail staff with projects as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate computerized cash register system.
  • Balance cash, checks, and daily receipts.
  • Greet customers and provide customer service, both in person and on the phone.
  • Assist regular staff with stocking food and beverage, merchandise, and textbooks as needed.
  • Assist customers with pulling and purchasing their required course materials from the designated area.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow organizational work rules and policies.

  • Visual ability to read price tag information and customer identification.
  • Basic English language writing skills for completion of payment processing and paperwork involved in balancing the cash register.
  • Basic mathematical skills, including addition and subtraction, necessary to verify cash register functions and assist with inventory counts.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise a high level of professionalism, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to operate all cash registers and electronic equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Visual ability to observe at a distance and verify customer identification.
  • Willingness to work scheduled hours as required during peak periods.

Ergonomic Requirements:

Regular hours are established between 8 am and 5 pm, with flexibility required for nights and weekends due to the nature of the responsibilities. Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in primarily sedentary work. Requires the ability to work at a workstation for extended periods, write, read written materials, and use telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs is required.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED completed or in progress, or equivalent work experience.
  • For Retail Cashier II: 2 terms of work experience as a Retail Cashier I.
  • For Retail Cashier III: 2 terms of work experience as a Retail Cashier II.
  • For Retail Cashier IV: 2 terms of work experience as a Retail Cashier III.
