Patient Care Assistant

Under the direct oversight of a Registered Nurse or licensed Nurse, this role involves supporting routine and repetitive patient care tasks within a healthcare unit. The position also encompasses specific administrative, organizational, and patient-centered responsibilities. The patient-focused duties are primarily supportive in nature.
The Medical Surgical Gastro unit specializes in Med/Surg care with an emphasis on gastrointestinal issues. Many patients in this unit present with non-surgical abdominal discomfort, liver diseases, viral hepatitis, bowel obstructions, severe nausea and vomiting, gallstones, acute pancreatitis, diarrhea, inflammatory bowel diseases, and gastrointestinal hemorrhages. Additionally, we accommodate patients recovering from less complex surgical procedures. This is a dynamic environment that offers numerous opportunities for professional growth. Key Responsibilities:
- Exhibit proficiency in the relevant OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
- Assist with the admission, transfer, and discharge processes for patients.
- Complete necessary documentation accurately.
- Prepare patient rooms for new admissions by setting up IV equipment and adjusting beds to the appropriate height.
- Ensure that all personal belongings accompany patients during transfers or discharges.
- Safely transport stable patients as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality and security while transporting patients and interacting with their families and visitors.
- Clean, procure, and return medical equipment and supplies as required.
- Run errands for the unit as necessary.
- Support licensed personnel in creating a safe and comfortable environment; replenish patient rooms with water, linens, and towels as needed.
- Perform unit-specific patient care tasks in accordance with established protocols and document on the appropriate forms.
- Recognize significant changes in patients' conditions and promptly report these observations to the supervising nurse.
- Assist with the ordering and management of inventory items as needed.
- Keep unit supplies organized and orderly.
- Respond appropriately to emergency situations.
- Communicate effectively with team members during and between shifts.
- Respond to phone inquiries and patient call lights in a timely manner.
- Adapt patient assessments, treatments, and care methods to meet the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific, and developmental needs of each patient.
- Demonstrate the ability to perform assigned patient care duties in a manner that meets the specific needs of the patient population served by the department.
A. Education/Skills
High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred.
B. Experience
Experience in patient care within an acute care setting is preferred.
C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications
CNA License in the state of employment is required.
BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required.
