Position Overview:

Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or licensed Nurse, the Patient Care Assistant will support routine and repetitive patient care activities within a healthcare unit.

This role also encompasses specific clerical, organizational, and patient-centered tasks that are primarily supportive in nature. The unit is dedicated to Neuro Telemetry and Neuro Surgical Services, catering to a 36-bed capacity.

Patient Population:
The primary patient demographic includes individuals with stroke, brain, and spinal conditions, such as seizures, brain aneurysms, laminectomies, cervical fusions, stable craniotomies, and mechanical thrombectomies following a 24-hour ICU recovery, as well as conditions like Guillain-Barre syndrome and myasthenia gravis.

Our staffing model features a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:3-5, which is adjusted based on patient acuity levels. We maintain a collaborative relationship with our neuro surgeons and neurologists, who provide essential education and guidance to enhance our nursing care.

Unit Excellence:
Our unit takes pride in achieving DNV Comprehensive Level 1 stroke certification, fostering a culture of teamwork and quality. Every team member, including Physicians, Stroke Coordinators, Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, therapists, and case managers, plays a vital role in the success of our unit.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Uphold the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
  • Assist with the admission, transfer, and discharge processes for patients.
  • Complete necessary documentation accurately.
  • Prepare patient rooms for new admissions by setting up IV equipment and adjusting beds to appropriate levels.
  • Ensure all patient belongings are transported with them during transfers or discharges.
  • Safely transport stable patients as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security while interacting with patients, families, and visitors.
  • Clean, procure, and return equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Perform errands for the unit as necessary.
  • Assist licensed personnel in creating a safe and comfortable environment, including replenishing patient rooms with water, linens, and towels.
  • Execute unit-specific patient care tasks in accordance with established protocols and document on the flowsheet.
  • Identify and report any noticeable changes in patients' conditions to the nurse in charge promptly.
  • Assist with inventory management and stock item maintenance as required.
  • Keep unit supplies organized and orderly.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies.
  • Communicate effectively with team members during and between shifts.
  • Address phone calls and patient call lights promptly.
  • Adapt patient assessment and care methods to meet the unique needs of each patient served.
  • Demonstrate competence in performing assigned patient care responsibilities that align with the developmental needs of the patient population.

Qualifications:
A. Education/Skills: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
B. Experience: Previous patient care experience in an acute care setting is preferred.
C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications: A valid CNA License in the state of employment is required. BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) is also required.
