Overview:


Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or licensed Nurse, this role involves assisting with routine and repetitive patient care tasks within a healthcare unit.

This position also encompasses specific clerical, organizational, and patient-centered responsibilities. The patient-focused duties will be primarily supportive in nature.

The unit is a 36-bed facility specializing in Neuro Telemetry and Neuro Surgical Services.

The main patient demographic includes individuals with stroke, brain, and spinal conditions, which may involve seizures, brain aneurysms, laminectomies, cervical fusions, stable craniotomies, and mechanical thrombectomies following 24 hours of ICU recovery, as well as conditions like Guillain-Barre syndrome and myasthenia gravis.

Our staffing model features a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:3-5, adjusted according to patient acuity.

We maintain a strong collaborative relationship with our neuro surgeons and neurologists, who provide essential education and guidance to enhance our nursing care.

The unit takes pride in its DNV Comprehensive Level 1 stroke certification and is committed to fostering a culture of teamwork and quality.

Every team member, including Physicians, Stroke Coordinators, Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, therapists, and case managers, plays a vital role in the success of our unit.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Meets the expectations of the relevant OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
  • Assists with the admission, transfer, and discharge processes for patients.
  • Completes necessary documentation accurately.
  • Prepares patient rooms for admissions by setting up IV pots and adjusting beds to the appropriate height.
  • Ensures that all patient belongings accompany them during transfers or discharges.
  • Safely transports stable patients as needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality and security while transporting patients and interacting with families and visitors.
  • Cleans, procures, and returns equipment and supplies as required.
  • Runs errands for the unit as necessary.
  • Assists licensed personnel in creating a safe and comfortable environment, including replenishing patient rooms with water, linens, and towels.
  • Performs unit-specific patient care tasks according to the skills checklist and documents on the flowsheet.
  • Identifies noticeable changes in patients' conditions and promptly reports these changes to the nurse in charge.
  • Assists with ordering and maintaining stock items in accordance with established inventory protocols.
  • Keeps unit supplies organized and orderly.
  • Responds appropriately to emergencies.
  • Communicates effectively with team members during and between shifts.
  • Responds to phone calls and patient call lights in a timely manner.
  • Adapts patient assessment, treatment, and care methods to meet the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific, and developmental needs of each patient.
  • Demonstrates competence in performing assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the population-specific and developmental needs of patients served by the department.

Qualifications:
A. Education/Skills

High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

B. Experience

Experience in patient care within an acute care setting is preferred.

C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

CNA License in the state of employment is required.
BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required.
