Position Overview

Lead Clinical Veterinarian - Research Specialist

At Zoetis, we are dedicated to advancing veterinary medicine through innovative research and development. We are currently looking for a highly skilled and motivated Lead Clinical Veterinarian to join our Veterinary Service team. This role is crucial in ensuring the highest standards of animal care and supporting our research initiatives.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Applicants must possess a DVM/VMD degree from an accredited institution, with at least 3 years of clinical experience focusing on companion animal medicine and surgery.
  • Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state is required, with the expectation of obtaining licensure in the relevant state.
  • Federal accreditation or the ability to achieve it is necessary.
  • Proven hands-on experience in various companion animal procedures, including clinical examinations, surgical techniques, and necropsy.

Preferred Attributes:

  • Experience in a research environment as a clinical veterinarian.
  • Board certification from the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DACLAM) is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with developing animal models for research purposes.
  • Experience in biocontainment facilities and knowledge of biosecurity protocols.
  • Additional training in related fields such as infectious diseases or immunology is beneficial.
  • Understanding of animal welfare regulations and compliance.
  • Experience with animal programs subject to USDA APHIS regulations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, initiative, and attention to detail are essential.
  • Excellent documentation, communication, and teaching abilities.
  • Proficiency in various software platforms for data management.

Key Responsibilities:

The primary role involves providing comprehensive clinical veterinary support for research animals. Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing population health management and preventive care protocols.
  • Training animal care staff and study personnel.
  • Reviewing research protocols to ensure compliance with established guidelines.
  • Participating in pre-study planning and health assessments.
  • Preparing necessary health documentation.
  • Conducting necropsies and authoring standard operating procedures.
  • Engaging in veterinary on-call duties as needed.
  • Contributing to facility design and renovation projects.

Additional Information:

  • The role requires collaboration with research scientists and technical staff, with potential exposure to zoonotic diseases.
  • Veterinary support is divided between research projects and animal care programs.
  • Participation in on-call duties may include weekends and holidays.
  • Some travel may be required for off-site responsibilities.
