Los Alamos, New Mexico, United States Los Alamos National Laboratory Full time
Position Overview
The Quantum Technologies Team is on the lookout for enthusiastic postdoctoral researchers specializing in experimental atomic and optical physics. Our current research endeavors, conducted by a dedicated team, revolve around atom interferometry and quantum information science utilizing ultracold atoms. Appointees will engage with our advanced systems designed for manipulating ultracold Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) and individual atoms in dynamic, controllable environments.

Key Responsibilities:
Postdoctoral researchers will focus on:
  • Creating Schrödinger cat states with an Atom SQUID.
  • Utilizing BECs and arrays of Rydberg atoms to investigate quantum materials.
  • Demonstrating control of qudits (high-dimensional qubits) in strontium.
  • Exploring waveguide atom interferometry.
  • Innovating novel approaches to quantum sensing.
  • Implementing new quantum metrology algorithms with ultracold atoms.

Applicants should possess significant experience in experimental cold atom physics or related fields that provide a strong foundation for quickly acquiring the necessary knowledge.

The LANL Postdoctoral Program serves as a pathway for recruiting technical staff, many of whom initially joined as postdoctoral researchers. The Laboratory actively encourages mentors to assist their postdocs in exploring opportunities for transitioning to permanent staff roles.

Essential Qualifications:
  • Proven ability to conduct independent research in experimental atomic physics or related technical disciplines.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a diverse team environment.
Educational Background:
A Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field is required, preferably completed within the last five years or nearing completion.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with cold atom physics.
  • Understanding of quantum information science.
  • Knowledge of optics and laser physics.
  • A strong publication record and experience in presenting research at conferences.
Location: This position is based in Los Alamos, NM. Competitive salaries are determined by the completion date of PhD requirements or the awarding of the degree.
