Job Title: Shock Physics Scientist

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Scientist 2/3 to join our Shock and Diagnostics Team (SDT) within the Shock & Detonation Physics Group (M-9). The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting dynamic experiments and analyzing data to advance our understanding of shock physics and its applications.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and conduct dynamic experiments using high-strain-rate mechanics and synchrotron or other user facilities.
  • Analyze data from experiments to determine compression, phase change, or morphology changes during dynamic drive or detonation.
  • Develop and implement new experimental techniques and methods to improve our understanding of shock physics.
  • Collaborate with other researchers and engineers to advance our research goals and objectives.
Requirements:
  • PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Geology, or a closely-related field.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in dynamic experimentation and analysis, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Experience leading projects and project teams.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Department of Energy (DOE) Q Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with pyrometry, X-ray, or laser-based diagnostics.
  • Experience setting up oscilloscopes and instrumentation to acquire short duration, single occurrence events.
  • Experience with computer programming languages for instrument control, data acquisition, and data analysis (e.g. LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python).
