Job Title: High Explosives R&D Technologist 2/3

Join the High Explosives Science & Technology (Q-5) Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory as a Research Technologist 2 or 3. Our team is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented experimentalist to work alongside a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and technologists in the development and execution of LANL mission-relevant projects involving the manufacturing and processing of high explosives and their formulations.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide experimental support in a range of high explosive manufacturing operations, including chemical synthesis, mixing, pressing, pilot plant synthesis, and formulation scale-up.
  • Perform a range of analysis, from characterization of the fundamental ingredient properties to the final formulated product.
  • Assist in method development and lead experimental campaigns.
  • Contribute to scientific reports and proposals.
  • Mentor junior staff members.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience for Research Technologist 2, or 8 years related experience for Research Technologist 3.
  • Preferred degrees: Chemistry, Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or related degree.
  • Experience with handling or mixing of energetic materials and formulations, and/or certified as an HE handler.
  • Demonstrated experience with material characterization techniques, such as particle size characterization, compositional analysis, material solubilities, microscopy, etc.
  • Experience in procurement, assembly, modification, and maintenance of scientific lab instrumentation.
  • Experience with LANL reporting requirements for environmental compliance, hazardous waste, chemical inventory, etc.
  • Knowledge of DOE Conduct of Operations and safety/security requirements for high explosive facilities.
  • Active DOE security clearance.
Work Environment:

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.

The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
