The San Diego office of SmithGroup is in search of a Central Utility Plant and Infrastructure Group Leader.

In this role, you will:

  • Build and maintain relationships with institutional, commercial, and academic stakeholders to promote collaboration and knowledge-sharing in sustainable thermal infrastructure.
  • Design systems for geothermal exchange, sanitary waste heat recovery, and thermal storage, including campus and district systems, building upgrades, and distribution networks.
  • Lead the integration of building systems with electrical power grids.
  • Provide expert advice and solutions on central plant and infrastructure design, particularly focusing on decarbonization, to internal teams, clients, and partners.
  • Stay informed about emerging technologies and industry trends related to energy integration and contribute to innovative solution development.
  • Manage projects related to central plant and infrastructure design from conception through implementation, ensuring alignment with sustainability objectives.
  • Oversee and guide mechanical engineering design teams in planning, analysis, and the delivery of construction and specification documents, with familiarity in energy modeling, geothermal exchange modeling, equipment selection, and field observations.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, collaborating with regulatory bodies as necessary.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in central plant and infrastructure design, with a strong background in electrification and decarbonization.
  • A Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Professional license are required; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • A proven history of successful engagement with institutional, commercial, and academic sectors.
  • Extensive knowledge of mechanical systems, equipment selection, geothermal exchange, sanitary waste energy recovery, and thermal storage system design.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills necessary for team building and developing cross-disciplinary relationships.
  • Robust project management abilities and experience leading cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Familiarity with sustainability practices and net-zero building principles.

SmithGroup offers a competitive compensation and benefits package tailored to meet the diverse needs of our staff. The anticipated salary range for this position is $170,000 to $210,000 annually. Additionally, this position is eligible for an annual performance-based bonus. Our comprehensive benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, flexible spending account options, and voluntary insurances. We provide opportunities for future investment through our 401(k) program with employer matching and continuing education reimbursement.
