Position Overview

OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE:

The Art Therapy Specialist plays a crucial role within the interdisciplinary treatment team in the psychiatry department. Under guidance, this position involves contributing to the creation and execution of a clinically effective, culturally attuned therapeutic program for adults experiencing serious mental health challenges, which may include co-occurring substance use and medical issues. The Art Therapy Specialist is responsible for providing clinical oversight and direct patient engagement, facilitating therapeutic groups and individual sessions in a compassionate, person-centered manner to foster recovery and independence.

DETAILED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of the Licensed Art Therapist 3/Associate Director, and in addition to fulfilling the responsibilities of Assignment Level 1, the Art Therapy Specialist Level 2 will also:

• Deliver therapeutic activities that are culturally relevant, age-appropriate, and tailored to the assessed needs of clients.

• Manage a caseload and complete assigned sections of biopsychosocial assessments.

• Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to assist clients in identifying challenges, exploring solutions, setting achievable goals, and implementing strategies that leverage their strengths, thereby motivating them towards recovery.

• Provide expert consultation for complex cases, evaluating social, cognitive, psychological, and physical functioning through the creative arts therapy approach.

• Implement therapeutic interventions utilizing various modalities such as art, music, drama, dance, or poetry to help patients achieve their treatment goals.

• Participate in the development of individualized treatment plans for patients. Monitor, document, and assess the progress towards creative arts therapy objectives as part of the therapeutic process.

• May design and lead departmental training programs to introduce innovative practices and techniques within the creative arts therapy field.

• May be tasked with instructing and supervising volunteers and students in creative arts therapy and related areas.

• Prepare supply requests and maintain inventory of necessary equipment and materials as designated.

• Compile and maintain progress reports, group attendance logs, statistical data, and engage in departmental and facility-wide quality assurance/performance improvement initiatives.

• May represent the department at conferences, workshops, and community events, reporting findings and actions to the department.

• May be assigned to serve as a primary therapist, provided that practice remains within the boundaries of professional competency as outlined in relevant regulations.

• Participate as a member of the PMCS instructor team, delivering staff training to effectively prevent and manage crisis situations.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Assignment Level I
1. A valid License or Limited Permit issued by the New York State Education Department to practice as an Art Therapist. Employees with a Limited Permit must obtain full Licensure within two years of their appointment.
Assignment Level II
1. A valid License issued by the New York State Education Department to practice as an Art Therapist; and
2. Two years of full-time, paid, professional experience in art therapy.
Assignment Level III
In addition to meeting the requirements for Assignment Levels II, Assignment Level III requires:
1. One additional year of experience.
