Job Summary

The Assistant Director of Financial Aid will oversee the financial aid office in the absence of the Director, providing guidance and support to students, parents, and alumni on financial aid resources, application procedures, and eligibility. This role requires a strong understanding of federal, state, and campus-based financial aid regulations, as well as excellent communication and organizational skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Counsel prospective and current students and families on financial aid options and application procedures.
  • Manage the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process, including verification and professional judgment cases.
  • Collect and review required documentation, including aid applications, award letters, and federal tax returns.
  • Oversee the HEOP program, including counseling prospective and continuing students, processing FAFSA and TAP applications, and manually packaging HEOP students.
  • Determine disbursement dates for Advance and MBA students.
  • Act as the NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) certifying officer, including certification of awards, roster maintenance, reductions, and de-certification.
  • Review and process applications for the NYS Aid for Part-Time Study program (APTS), including certification of awards and follow-up reporting with NYS Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC).
  • Oversee the Endowed and Restricted scholarship program, including fund allocation and reconciliation.
  • Provide training to admissions staff on the financial aid process.
  • Serve as the point of contact for the Office of Veterans Affairs.
  • Backup to the System Applications Analyst for electronic processing and transmissions.
  • Participate in recruitment efforts, high school programs, and other community outreach endeavors.
Requirements
  • Ability to counsel effectively and express oneself clearly orally and in writing.
  • Sound professional judgment, patience, tact, sensitivity, and courtesy.
  • Ability to organize work efficiently with others and work effectively with governmental and private agencies.
  • High degree of initiative, dependability, and professionalism.
  • Knowledge of federal and state financial aid programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with a culturally diverse population.
  • Bachelor's degree (Master's degree preferred).
  • Minimum three years' experience in higher education (financial aid at least two years) preferred.
