We are currently seeking a Lead Automation Controls Engineer to join our team. This role is integral to our Global Automation Engineering Group, which showcases innovative technical expertise and world-class technologies that enhance the quality and performance of our medical devices. The Lead Automation Controls Engineer will provide engineering and technical resource expertise to enhance the group's contributions to organizational performance.

This position serves as a key leader within the technical community, collaborating across all technical functions, both internally and externally, to develop new technologies and processes for current and future product manufacturing. The individual will be responsible for designing, constructing, and implementing the most efficient manufacturing control hardware and software to meet the automation needs of a dynamic and technically complex business.

Key Responsibilities:

This role will primarily focus on the design, development, specification, and implementation of automation controls and instrumentation for assembly and packaging processes. Continuous improvement initiatives, technology transfers, and new product development will also be key areas of focus in alignment with business objectives.

  • Design and implement sophisticated Machine Vision, Laser, and Measurement Systems for quality control on assembly equipment.
  • Develop, test, and execute PLC/SCADA application software for manufacturing processes, equipment, and systems.
  • Create or coordinate hardware and software design solutions for complex challenges; integrate regulatory and operational requirements, and evaluate cost benefits.
Education:
  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering.
  • Master of Science or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering is a plus.
Required Experience and Skills:
  • Extensive experience in designing, debugging, specifying, selecting, manufacturing acceptance, installation, startup, commissioning, and validation of control systems for fully automated and advanced discrete component assembly.
  • Technical mastery in automation control systems engineering, with comprehensive knowledge of control and instrumentation design principles.
  • Hands-on technical capability in developing machine controls for newly built custom automation machines; experience in industrial clean room manufacturing environments is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in development, prototyping, simulation, design, and troubleshooting of software and hardware controls, including electrical schematics, panel layouts, facility inputs, networking, device communications, Programmable Logic Controllers (preferably Allen Bradley), Human Machine Interfaces, general-purpose industrial computers, complex motion control, robotics programming, microprocessors, servo control, pneumatics, sensors, and vision systems.
  • Proven ability to understand user requirements for complex products and translate these into conceptualized automated control solutions for an island of automation. Experience in regulated and/or medical device industries is beneficial.
  • Experience collaborating with external partners and internal customers to address challenges.
  • Ability to critically evaluate engineering designs and ensure compliance with company design and development guidelines and SOPs. Proven ability to manage multiple projects is a plus.
  • Assist in the successful creation and management of validation master plans for new control or instrumentation technologies, and/or transferring technologies to new manufacturing sites.
  • Capable of addressing barriers, problems, and challenges with internal manufacturing or external equipment suppliers.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Knowledge and experience with post-implementation continuous improvement efforts and methodologies are advantageous.
  • Depth in VFD and Servo Drives (AB & SEW) preferred.
  • Experience with machine vision is a strong plus (Keyence and Cognex preferred).
  • Strong understanding of PID loops and process control concepts.
  • Proven knowledge of servo motion control concepts and robotics (ABB preferred).
  • SQL Server Database knowledge and Visual Basic Programming is a plus.
  • Applied problem-solving skills with a hands-on approach to identify root causes and define solutions.
  • Understanding and proven experience in implementing machine and process safety considerations is critical. Knowledge of CE, UL, SCCR & NFPA-70E&79 regulations is a plus.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to travel as needed, with anticipated travel estimated at less than 10% of their time.
  • 6-8 years of hands-on automation controls design experience is required.
