Position Overview:

The Optometric Assistant Specialist plays a vital role in supporting optometrists by facilitating optimal patient care and enhancing the overall efficiency of the practice.

Working closely under the guidance of the optometrist, this position involves providing essential technical and administrative support to ensure a seamless patient experience.


Key Responsibilities:

- Accurately document patients' medical and visual histories, and prepare necessary clinical information for the optometrist.

- Measure and record patient vitals as required in the electronic medical record (EMR).

- Conduct preliminary assessments, including evaluating visual skills, muscle function, and pupil responses.

- Perform diagnostic tests such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Visual Fields, and Diabetic Imaging.

- Maintain precise records and reports as directed by the optometrist.

- Administer eye drops as prescribed by the optometrist.

- Assist in therapeutic procedures, including the removal of foreign bodies.

- Manage incoming communications from patients, assessing their needs and triaging appropriately.

- Oversee the scheduling of appointments for the optometrist.


- Ensure that diagnostic and therapeutic instruments are properly maintained, cleaned, and calibrated.

- Monitor the condition of instruments and arrange for repairs or recalibrations as needed.

- Maintain a stock of sterile instruments and medications for ophthalmic procedures.


- Address patient inquiries and concerns, ensuring they are resolved or directed to the appropriate personnel.

- Collaborate with various departments to coordinate comprehensive patient care.

- Adhere to all organizational policies, procedures, and standards regarding patient treatment and confidentiality.

- Perform additional duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

- Experience: A minimum of one (1) year of clinical experience in a back-office setting supporting a healthcare provider, or completion of an accredited clinical assistant program (e.g., Medical Assistants, Certified Nursing Assistants, Licensed Practical Nurses, Dental Assistants, or Patient Care Technicians), along with a commitment to participate in on-the-job training in the optometry program.


Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Licensure and Certification:

- Obtain a Paraoptometric Technician Certificate, Paraoptometric Assistant Certificate, Ophthalmic Assistant Certificate, or Ophthalmic Technician Certificate within 24 months of hire from recognized professional organizations.

- Acquire Registered Medical Assistant certification within 2 months of hire in accordance with state regulations.


Additional Skills:

- Proven experience and proficiency with ophthalmic instruments, including auto-refractors, auto-lensometers, non-contact tonometers, and visual field testing equipment.

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

- Ability to thrive in a professional healthcare environment.

- Familiarity with optometric terminology and equipment.


Preferred Experience:
- Two (2) years of experience in an optometric or ophthalmic practice.

- Basic understanding of organizational policies and procedures.

- Knowledge of basic science and optics, as well as familiarity with optometric procedures.

- Understanding of the administration of optometric pharmaceuticals.

- Experience with HealthConnect systems.
