POSITION SUMMARY
*The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)* serves as a vital member of the healthcare team, working under the guidance of a registered nurse to provide essential services that cater to the personal needs of patients and enhance their comfort. The hospice aide plays a crucial role in monitoring patient conditions, reporting observations, and meticulously documenting care provided.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The hospice aide's responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Attending to personal care needs promptly following patient assignments and addressing requests as needed. Report any inability to perform tasks to the Case Manager immediately.
  • Employing effective communication techniques with patients and families, ensuring ethical and respectful care while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ensuring patient safety and utilizing equipment properly (e.g., foot stools, side rails, oxygen).
  • Delivering personal care services such as bathing, back rubs, oral hygiene, and changing bed linens as scheduled.
  • Assisting patients with dressing and undressing as required.
  • Planning and preparing nutritious meals, including grocery shopping, as assigned.
  • Aiding in feeding patients as directed.
  • Taking and documenting vital signs, including temperatures, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure, as ordered, demonstrating appropriate skills competency.
  • Monitoring and caring for patients' skin to prevent tissue breakdown over bony areas.
  • Reporting significant changes in patient conditions to the Case Manager and being aware of interpersonal dynamics involving caregivers or others in the patient's environment.
  • Supporting patients in ambulation and exercise as instructed by the hospice nurse or therapist.
  • Facilitating normal range of motion and assisting with transfers/positioning as directed.
  • Providing assistance with self-administered medications as permitted by state regulations, such as reminders.
  • Offering assistance with bedpans and urinals, as well as light laundry tasks as assigned.
  • Performing range of motion exercises and other simple procedures as an extension of therapy services as ordered, demonstrating appropriate skills competency.
  • Providing respite care for patients and their families/caregivers when present, as appropriate.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in the patient's living area as assigned.
  • Adhering to the organization's documentation standards and maintaining professional conduct.
  • Participating in quality assessment and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Respecting the environment and personal needs of patients and their families/caregivers.

LIMITATIONS OF THE ROLE:

The hospice aide is not permitted to engage in activities classified as nursing practice according to the Nurse Practice Act.

Specifically, the hospice aide will not administer medications, take physician orders, or perform procedures that require the expertise of a licensed nurse, such as sterile techniques.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Meets state training requirements.
  • Completed a minimum of 75 hours of classroom and supervised practical training, with 16 hours of classroom instruction prior to a mandatory 16 hours of practical training.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions and document care provided.
  • Familiarity with hospice philosophy and comfort in providing specialized care to terminally ill patients.
  • Positive references from previous employers.
  • Self-directed with the ability to work independently. Comfortable with issues surrounding death and dying, providing a calm demeanor in patient homes.
  • Empathetic towards the needs of the ill, injured, frail, and impaired.
  • Current CPR certification is required.
  • Demonstrates patience, tact, and good personal hygiene.
  • Valid driver's license with automobile insurance that meets organizational requirements and is in good working condition.
  • Successfully completes a probationary period to ensure competency in the above qualifications, documented by the supervisor and the employee.

Job Type:
Full-time

Pay Rate:
$23.00 per hour
